EDIT: Today I received a phone call from Dr. Haley, and while I appreciate the gesture of reaching out personally .. It really solidified that I will not be coming back with my other animals. Having to hear that there was pretty much no saving Chikn, and reliving losing him again because of a review just really drove home the lack of bedside manners. This practice made mourning my baby so much harder. Please do not reach out to me further. I would just like to mourn Chikn now.

I know losing patients in this field is already hard enough, and I don't want to seem disgruntled just because my baby wasn't saved. My issue is more with my experience overall. I don't know if my baby could have been saved if he was diagnosed correctly. I don't know if he would have survived a surgery.
My bearded dragon Chikn Nubbit went downhill in the span of a day. From eating and basking to black bearded and lethargic. I got off work early and rushed him to Haley. I do appreciate them getting me an appointment right away, I called them and they got me an appointment for 30 minutes later. Which is about the time it takes me to drive there.
My main complaint is that I told one of the techs I believe that I would like an X-ray because I was afraid he had eaten a plastic plant in his enclosure. They only had me pay for half the X-ray with the boarding. They decided not to do the X-ray until the following day. Chikn passed away that night. I don't know if he would have even survived surgery but it is so disheartening that we were treating with antibiotics when that X-ray could have changed the trajectory of his treatment.
I waited for several hours the next day for a phone call updating me on Chikn's status. I know vet offices get hectic so I wasn't upset about that. Eventually I called in and spoke with Dr Haley who let me know he accidentally dialed the wrong number earlier, and meant to tell me Chikn didn't make it. I know it's hard to deliver that news but it felt so cruelly casual.
Up to this point they had also been misspelling Chikn's name. When I came to pay for memorial paw prints and cremation, I wrote down his name for them to make sure it was written correctly on the memorial. It was not. I know his name is unique but losing a pet is hard enough, worse when having to correct staff on their name on 4 different occasions. Thankfully the name plate on the paw print memorial was a sticker so I could remove it and create my own name plate.
Come to today when I'm cleaning out his enclosure finally and find he had in fact eaten pieces of a plastic plant. Vets aren't psychic and can't know everything .. but I really do wish a patient who was described as critical could have had tests done the same day.
Losing a pet is never easy, but I really felt like my mourning could have been helped by a little more compassion. I feel like I'm left with so many what ifs and regrets. Like I should have advocated more for him to get the tests done. Money wasn't a factor. I just wanted to save him.
I do believe they do good work and have saved animals. But I still had to call in myself to find out Chikn Nubbit didn't survive the night, and had to redo his memorial because his name was still misspelled. It feels like a unfitting end for a loved pet.
