Exceptionally TERRIBLE animal (specifically bird) care.
I should have known better when coming into this store. I blindly came into here during the month of September to purchase a parakeet, because I was told that I could not purchase a dog or cat by my parents. First of all, the bird cage prices are ridiculous. I purchased a small cage suitable for a finch at best, when I was told it was suitable for a single parakeet, for $50. Although, the employee was nice enough to give me a discount. I know have a 2X bigger cage for $3 less!
Secondly, throughout the months, I have noticed the terrible animal care compared to other establishments. Petco has a habit of gruesomely and extremely poorly clipping their birds wings, leaving them half immobile and unable to exercise, leading to early obesity. Secondly, Petco provides an abundant amount of low quality food to all of their birds. Lastly, Petco does not bother to clean the birds’ cages whatsoever. Last time I walked into a Petco, I saw a canary winged parakeet basically sitting in a mountain of his own droppings!
As for my parakeet purchase, I have not been able to experience the full enjoyment of parakeet ownership with him as compared to my second parakeet, which was purchased at PetSmart. My Petco parakeet has to literally jump around his cage, because he cannot fly. And during out of cage sessions, my PetSmart parakeet thrives, while my Petco parakeet falls from heights and injures himself, due to his wing clip, and is virtually impossible to get back in the cage without breaking trust by grabbing. I have taken every initiative possible to keep my Petco bird healthy as can be, providing a proper diet, enrichment, and cage space, but he is still very uncooperative with any attempted training. As for my PetSmart parakeet, he is cooperative (as much as a small parakeet can be, at least) and is a pleasure to have in the household.
Overall, please do not purchase a bird from Petco, especially a $1600 hand fed sun conure! (Yes, this is a real listing that they have at one of their stores!)

I am visiting from out of state and, after a really disappointing experience at Petsmart, I decided to stop by Petco—and I am SO glad I did!
Jahsir and Ciomarie were beyond incredible. I have honestly never seen a team multitask the way they do while still making every single customer feel seen, heard, and completely taken care of. Their teamwork is seamless—they balance each other perfectly, and the store doesn’t feel like a place you’re just “shopping.” It feels warm, welcoming, and comfortable.
Jahsir’s knowledge about fish, fish care, and products is unmatched. He gave me his full attention and treated me like family. He went above and beyond by showing me how to properly care for the fish and clean the tank—something he absolutely didn’t have to do. Because of him, I will continue going to Petco for all of my fish needs. His passion and expertise truly made a difference.
Ciomarie immediately understood that I’m just a mom trying to do something special for my two little girls. She was warm, kind, and incredibly understanding. Nothing can fully describe how meaningful it was to feel that level of kindness from a complete stranger. Both of them made sure I felt comfortable—even when I took a long time deciding which fish to buy (and ended up getting both!). Not once did they seem annoyed. They laughed with me, reassured me, and never made me feel like I was bothering them. That is such a rare skill.
This visit left a lasting impact on me—not just as a customer, but as a person. The way they treated me is something I will carry forward in how I treat others. Please recognize Jahsir and Ciomarie for going above and beyond. They truly deserve a raise and a huge shoutout from this very grateful Northeast customer!
Thank you for creating such a warm, welcoming, and fun environment. I will absolutely be telling everyone to shop at Petco because of this experience.
Thank you again, Jahsir and Ciomarie—you made a INCREDIBLE and lasting impression! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
