I took my 14 year old Maltese in for respiratory problems that started showing late Saturday evening, it’s Monday morning when I call to request an urgent appointment. I meet with the Doctor and Nurse they taker her back for X-rays and bloodwork. The. Rays come back with Pneumonia and they request I leave her for treatment including antibiotics and IV fluids which I agree to. Both of my dogs and a cat are on wellness plans. When I arrive to pick up my baby at 5:15PM the nurse tells me all has been good, and that she ate a bit of food even (the previous night was the first time my pup rejected eating). She gave my husband and I three medications; anti-nausea, Doxy and clindamycin, as well as an RX card for special wet food. All of this runs me $895, plus the cost of the food (PetSmart ~$30, since I buy a weeks worth) the meds are meant to go until finished ~2weeks, then a check up. I want to make this extremely clear- AT NO TIME DID THE DR. OR THE NURSE EVEN MENTION THAT THE PNEUMONIA WAS SEVERE, AT NO TIME DUD THEY OFFER ME TO PUT MY ANGRL TO SLEEP, PEACEFULLY. No mention of % chance of anything, one way or another— they just took my money and let me believe that she would pull through. It’s now 4:30AM same day (basically, same 24 hours. My girl took both meds, gave them by spoon with food [wet food/liquid meds] she was getting up frequently to get drinks throughout the night and go potty. My husband and I made a bed on the sofa downstairs so our pup wouldn’t get jostled being carried down to potty since her breathing was labored). She’s died in our arms- it was traumatic, gasping, convulsing— there was nothing my husband or I could do other than pray and tell her we loved her and what a good girl she had been. I held her as she looked up at me and I was helpless. God, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. I am so grateful for the time I had and so sad as I wrote this, and honestly I know I’m grieving right now, but all I can think is that Bandfield’s Drs just took my money. We could have come to terms with putting her down peacefully at the clinic, where she would have drifted to a final sleep without the fear and trauma. I can guarantee, if she died in less than 12 hours after them handing her back to me, that the X-rays showed severity of the illness— so WHY?! Why send her home with hope, why charge me $895 vs half for the euthanasia and peace? Is that what we e come to now? Not caring for pets and people but making a buck? I’m disgusted and disappointed… I can’t believe this is the state of mankind right now. I will be calling first thing in the morning requesting a refund and removing all of my pets from their wellness plans- what’s the point, if they’re just going to take my money and send them home to die without any honest conversation about the possibilities or other treatment options. PS. I have another Maltese at home, her sister, that I had to call the vet on the way home to ask if it could be contagious— the Dr asked me about the sister at my appointment but never discussed if I should keep them separated or anything— they do/did 😢 everything together. I’ll be calling another vet tomorrow to get her chest listened too, just in case (she’s had no symptoms, but they are the same age, and my angel-baby only presented symptoms Saturday evening, so less than 3 full days ago). Needless to say- I give this situation negative stars but Google requires 1 to write a review.
