I came to the store yesterday (8 March 2026) with my wife to look at the betta fish section and what we saw was honestly disturbing.
There were multiple fish that were clearly sick one was floating vertically and struggling to breathe, another looked curled and extremely weak. We asked an employee for help and were directed to a manager named John.
Instead of taking the situation seriously, John was dismissive and sarcastic. He kept nodding with a smirk, as if we were overreacting or wasting his time. It genuinely felt like he was mocking us rather than addressing the issue.
When we asked basic questions about fish care how often the water is changed, how often they are fed he gave generic answers (“daily feeding, water changes 3–4 times a week”), which did not match the visible condition of the tanks. The water looked dirty, with clear waste buildup, suggesting poor maintenance.
At one point, instead of addressing the problem, he sarcastically told us to “diagnose the fish ourselves,” asking what diagnosis all these fish supposedly had. This is completely inappropriate behavior for a manager responsible for animal care.
One of the visibly sick fish was still being sold for $25. That is unacceptable. You do not need to be a veterinarian to see that these fish were in distress.
The containers themselves had a visible waterline, and the water level had been filled above it, which raises serious concerns about how these fish are being handled. With minimal air access through a tiny hole in the lid, the fish appeared to be struggling for oxygen.
We ended up purchasing the sick fish to try to save them. Unfortunately, one of them died shortly after we brought it home. The other is still being treated. The next morning, I returned to the store and was given a refund but none of the staff from the previous shift were there.
What is most concerning is not just the condition of the fish but the complete lack of empathy and professionalism. At one point, when we challenged his attitude, the manager even threatened to call security and have us removed from the store. He then walked away and openly discussed us with another employee while staring in our direction.
This kind of behavior is unacceptable. These are living animals, not disposable inventory. The lack of care, accountability, and basic respect from management is deeply disappointing.

A disgusting store with terrible service. The shop itself is quite dirty. The selection of animals is meager. They actually sell cute little mice exclusively as feeder animals—it’s appalling! You aren't allowed to buy one to love and keep as a pet. It’s absolutely terrible; why is it okay to keep a hamster or a rat, but not a mouse? Did the mice fail the casting call on racial grounds?

There should be more availability for prescription diet products. It is impossible to get certain items as they are in such demand, unless you buy online, however, that 3-day wait does not help a pet coming out of the hospital with one or two cans. With the growing need for prescription diets, the wall of products should be a well-stocked aisle, much like the aisles of “junk” food or cheaper pet food products . Petco needs to do better for owners of ill or aging pets.

I recently booked a grooming appointment for my Shih Tzu at Petco, and my experience was mixed—overall, I’d rate it about 3 stars.
Booking was frustrating from the start. The system flagged my dog as having “long hair,” which wasn’t accurate, and it actually interrupted the process. It made me question how reliable their intake system is.
I also scheduled a Bordetella shot during the visit, and the pricing caught me off guard. My regular vet charges $25, but Petco attempted to charge $57. There was no clear explanation upfront, so the lack of pricing transparency was disappointing.
For grooming, I was charged $108 for a bath and trim, which felt a bit steep, again without clear breakdowns of what was included.
That said, I do want to highlight the positives. The young woman who groomed my dog was very sweet and did a really good job—my dog looked great, and I appreciated the care she took. They also have a helpful visual guide (a rug-like rubric at check-in) that lets you choose the level of trim you want, which made communication much easier.
Overall, the quality of the grooming itself was solid, but the booking issues and unclear pricing make the experience feel inconsisten

I visited your store today and was honestly shocked by what I saw in the betta fish section.
There were multiple dead fish left in their cups, and several others were clearly very sick — struggling, floating sideways, and in extremely poor condition. The water in many of the containers looked dirty and neglected. This is not just poor care — this is inhumane treatment of living animals.
I had to personally point out at least three dead fish to your staff. No one had even noticed or checked them. That is unacceptable.
When I approached an employee at the front desk (a short, curly-haired young woman), her attitude was rude and dismissive. When I asked if she was the manager, she responded in a sarcastic and unprofessional manner instead of helping. Eventually she called a manager, but her behavior was disrespectful and inappropriate.
These are living creatures, not disposable products. The fact that they are inexpensive does not justify neglect and suffering.
This situation reflects extremely poorly on your store, your staff training, and your standards of animal care.
I strongly urge management to:
- regularly check all fish tanks and cups
- immediately remove dead or sick animals
- properly train staff to handle these situations professionally
- take animal welfare seriously
This should not be happening in a store that sells live animals.
I’m sorry I didn’t take pictures
But everything can be checked on cameras
