A Cautionary Experience at Banfield Pet Hospital – Monroe, NC
I’m sharing this in hopes of helping other pet owners make more informed decisions regarding their pets’ care.
We recently lost our beloved 12-year-old Weimaraner less than 42 hours after a routine dental cleaning at Banfield Pet Hospital in Monroe, NC. What was expected to be a standard procedure turned into a devastating tragedy due to complications from anesthesia.
Prior to the cleaning, I voiced concerns about the level and duration of anesthesia, especially considering our dog’s age. I was assured by the attending veterinarian that only minimal sedation would be used, and that he would be under for the shortest possible time.
We picked him up several hours post-procedure and were told that everything had gone smoothly. However, unlike previous cleanings, he was still lethargic and unable to stand on his own even hours later. That night, his breathing became labored.
I returned to Banfield first thing the next morning—before the vet had even arrived. When she did, we were taken back, and I had to carry him into the exam room. He was found to have a fever of 102°F and I was immediately advised to take him to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital for more in-depth care.
At the emergency facility, it was determined that he had developed aspiration pneumonia due to fluid entering his lungs during sedation. He was in critical condition, and I was told he had a 50/50 chance of survival. He was placed on antibiotics and pain management, including Fentanyl throughout the day.
By 6 p.m. that evening, I was contacted by the emergency vet urging me to come say goodbye. My wife and I rushed to be by his side. When we arrived, he was in intensive care, propped up with pillows and on oxygen barely acknowledging our presence. We left a shirt with my wife’s scent in hopes of comforting him.
Tragically, I received a call at 1 a.m. informing us that he had taken a turn for the worse. By the time we arrived—less than 15 minutes later—he had passed away. He had been revived once, but had begun bleeding from his nose and mouth, and could not be saved.
From the time he happily jumped into our Jeep for a routine cleaning, to the time he passed away in Intensive Care, less than 42 hours had passed.
Please take this as a reminder to ask detailed questions, weigh your options carefully, and consider second opinions—especially when anesthesia is involved. We trusted that our pet would be safe in Banfield’s care, but the outcome has left us devastated and full of questions.
Pet owners, please be vigilant.

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
