Mixed experience at Banfield in Hickory. Some staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, but one veterinarian I dealt with was unnecessarily abrasive, which made asking questions uncomfortable.
My biggest issue is transparency. Banfield heavily promotes its subscription-style wellness plans, but at this location I found it very hard to get clear, consistent explanations of what was actually included vs. what would still cost extra. I also felt pressured into add-on services and was told multiple “prerequisite” steps/additional expenses were required before getting the service I originally came for—without a clear medical explanation for why each step was necessary.
If you go, get a written, itemized estimate upfront and ask for a written list of what your plan does/doesn’t cover before agreeing to anything.

Have needed to bring my small dog here twice for urgent unexpected issues. The 1st visit was $120+ bc he was a new patient but from now on he'll be considered an existing patient so the 2nd visit was less than $50. This is amazingly inexpensive compared to vet offices. The staff here are caring and they accept walk-ins during afternoon hours if you give them a call first. That flexibility has really helped us. I would not hesitate to recommend this clinic.

Worse place ever, do not take your pet to this business, they reel you in hook line and sinker on their plans , then it’s difficult to get out of the plan that they don’t hold up to on their end. I called them when my puppy fell off the sofa and they wouldn’t see him, it was on Friday at 1:30 , they didn’t close until 6, they said they couldn’t see him until Monday, I ended up taking him to the emergency vet $700 dollars later while under their plan, so they don’t hold up to what they tell you they will do. There are plenty other vets in Catawba county and I’d highly recommend you try them before Banfield. They could care less about your pets.

We have been coming to Banfield for nearly 15 years for our pup. The staff have worked with us through cancer, leg amputation, diabetes, blindness and now dementia. They have always gone above and beyond. All of the current vets are incredible. What started out as a vet that was affordable due to their wellness plans has became an extension of our family. We are so grateful for this team of professionals.

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
