We have been bringing our pets here for many years, but have finally decided to leave. In hindsight, we probably should have left sooner. Our 8-year-old golden retriever has experienced multiple symptoms over the past four years. We first brought her in in 2022, and Dr. McCorkle ran basic blood work and reported that everything looked fine.
Years later, she was still showing the same signs, including lethargy, loss of appetite, and not wanting to play, and we were again told everything was normal. When we suggested she might have a tick-borne illness, this was dismissed with the explanation that there are not many ticks in the area.
After repeatedly being talked down to, we ultimately left the practice. Our new veterinarian immediately ran blood work and diagnosed her with Anaplasmosis. It is frustrating that ego seemed to get in the way of addressing our dog’s health, delaying the care she clearly needed.
I want to share my experience so other pet owners can make informed decisions.
Dr. McCorkle has been my veterinarian for many years, and I have brought multiple pets to this clinic over time. Because of that long history, what I experienced recently was especially disappointing.
During a prior visit concerning my dog’s eye, surgical removal of the eye was presented as the primary recommendation. Although I asked about medical management options, I did not feel those options were supported or encouraged. I chose to pursue antibiotic treatment independently and monitored her closely. She responded well and did not lose her eye.
Most recently, I brought her in as a precaution after she had already begun improving from a urinary issue. At the time of the visit, she was maintaining weight, eating normally, moving around, and generally stable for a senior dog.
The discussion quickly escalated to worst-case scenarios, including euthanasia being mentioned. The conversation then became accusatory, and I was spoken to in a way that suggested I had been neglecting my dog, which was extremely upsetting after caring for my pets here for many years.
I was told my dog was “miserable” and that euthanasia would likely be necessary, which was shocking to hear given how well she was actually doing at home and that she had already begun improving. The doctor then abruptly ended the visit and I left without any further care being provided.
My senior dog is currently stable, eating, walking, playing, and doing well.
I believe seeking a second opinion before making major decisions is essential, especially for senior pets.
Over the years I recommended this clinic to others. Unfortunately, based on my recent experiences, I can no longer do so and have chosen to seek care elsewhere.
Photo taken shortly after the visit. She was stable and already improving.
