My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic experience at the Petco in Belton, MO, and I highly recommend this store to anyone in the area.
We had a genuine emergency when our old 55-gallon aquarium for our black piranha suddenly sprang a leak late at night. We managed a temporary fix with duct tape and a large vice to get through until morning, but we live in a very rural part of Missouri, so finding a replacement quickly was crucial. Belton is about an hour away, and the most practical option for finding a 55-gallon tank in stock.
I called right at 9 am and spoke with an employee named Kaitlyn. I asked if they had any 55-gallon aquariums and briefly explained the situation. She told me they were rotating out the older models for the new Petco Imagitarium brand and that they happened to have one or two of the older-style 55-gallon tanks, brand new, left for sale. The price was only $47 plus tax, which is incredible when most new 55-gallon tanks cost at least $200 just for the glass tank alone.
Because we live so far away, I asked if she could put my name on one, and she immediately agreed and said she would hold it for us. That kind of understanding and accommodation was such a relief in the middle of a very stressful situation.
When we arrived, the store was larger than I expected and very open, bright, and well-lit. The first thing I noticed was how clean and well-maintained everything was. I am a herpetology enthusiast and studied it at university, so I pay close attention to reptiles and exotics. Every reptile I saw looked healthy, alert, and properly housed. There were no visible mites, no obvious waste, and the tanks were spotless. I watched a gecko happily eating mealworms, the bearded dragons were curious and friendly, and the turtles had a very nice, thoughtfully set-up habitat.
Beyond the reptiles, this store had a wonderful variety of animals, including jumping spiders, hermit crabs, adorable budgies, hamsters, mice, and a huge selection of freshwater and saltwater fish. They even had a little “Dory,” a young blue tang, with a little “Nemo” clownfish, which was a fun touch. You can see the health and diversity of the animals in the photos I attached to my review.
As we looked around, we quickly found the aquarium Kaitlyn had set aside. It was already on a rolling cart with a bright orange note taped to it with my name, just like she had promised. An employee came over to see if we needed help, and it turned out to be Kaitlyn herself. She was just as friendly in person as on the phone, explained the rotation from the older tanks to the new Imagitarium line, and talked with us about glass thickness, durability, and fish and reptiles in general.
Checkout was quick and easy, and the total was $53 after tax, which is almost unheard of for a brand new 55-gallon aquarium of that size and quality. If we had more room in the vehicle, I would have bought both remaining tanks as a backup. Kaitlyn also told us that if the tank leaked or anything was wrong, we could bring it back with our receipt for a refund or replacement, which gave us extra peace of mind.
We drove home relieved and carefully transferred our fish, plants, and as much of the existing water as possible into the new tank. The aquarium holds water perfectly, the glass is thicker and feels sturdier than our old one, and our black piranha is now happily swimming in a safe, stable environment again.
Overall, I am thrilled with our experience at the Belton Petco. The combination of outstanding customer service from Kaitlyn, excellent prices, a clean and well-run store, and clearly well-cared-for animals has earned them a solid five stars. I would gladly make the hour-long drive again for this level of care and highly recommend this location to anyone looking for aquariums, fish, reptiles, or other pets and supplies.
