  If you have a large dog, avoid. I moved to Detroit a few months ago, so needed a new groomer for my Newfie. He's about 95lb, extremely gentle/non-aggressive, and has been groomed many times before. I paid for the full monty - bath and brush, plus furminator, plus teeth brushing, plus nail trim. I think the total all together was just under $150. When I dropped him off, I got weird vibes. The groomer who looked visibly annoyed she'd have to groom a large dog, and there weren't any other groomers there. I asked if she could trim his paw pads as well (any groomer I've ever worked with is happy to do this for Newfies, as it's just kind of a quirk for the breed). She said "we're not supposed to do that, so..." so I was just like, okay that's fine if that's the rules here. All good. Upon pickup, she said he "wouldn't let her" trim his nails. My dog is 6 years old, has been groomed multiple times per year his entire life, and has always had his nails trimmed. He also literally doesn't understand the concept of aggression so it's not really possible for him to "not let" someone trim his nails. This tells me she either is not well-trained in grooming services, or just didn't want to trim them. Red flag either way. The worst part, however, was the groom itself. For a ~$150 groom I expect him to at least be..groomed. On top of being completely damp all over and fully wet in some spots...his entire neck area was covered in fresh, thick, deeply knotted mats. He had zero mats when I dropped him off, so...not sure what happened there. I called PetCo a couple times and they didn't answer. Finally left a voicemail, very kindly explaining that he had fresh mats on his neck, and asking if we could come back in to have those all brushed or cut out. Never heard back from them. This was a couple months ago. Bonus: I assume they also didn't actually furminate because he dropped SO much coat for the next week or so. Some extra shedding is always expected after a grooming but this was insane. What inspired me to write this review at all is that I just picked him up from a grooming at PetSmart in Royal Oak, and it was everything PetCo was not. Costed less for all the same services ($113 plus tip), they actually provided all of the services (they even mentioned trimming his paw pads before I even asked), and they were overall SO friendly and loving toward my dog and already excited for the next time he'll be groomed.

  Best grooming we've had in years! I'm not kidding, my swiss shepherd looks years younger! The de-shed package is worth it for shepherds shedding their undercoat. My dog came back clean, smelling great, fresh breath and looking happy too!
