So I'm giving this Petco a 3. Because it's hit-or-miss. I have been in here at times and dealt with certain employees, mostly, in the fish section, and they're very helpful. Patient explaining things to me, but I've had 2 negative experiences at the register. The first negative experience came after trying to return filters, they recommended. The original filters that came with the aquarium kit i purchased didn't seem to be working. They told me that I had the wrong filters. And I bought the ones they recommended but then they didn't work either. So I was back-and-forth a couple times trying different things. My water was black them green. I brought my water up here to be tested. Tried several products. Nothing was working. Finally went to the Laurel store and figured out what the problem was and corrected it.And when I came back here to purchase the right filters, they wouldn't return the original filters. They recommended i but, due to their return policy. I guess I spent 2 extra days trying to save my aquarium and so they refused to give me credit. Whatever, then today I'm in there and I'm again purchasing an airater, because I have a fish that I purchased here who is not very happy. He's grasping for air at the top of the tank. I've had 3 that have died from here. I go to check out and from the get the cashier wasn't very friendly, the cat scratcher that I purchased someone had torn off the code and she looked at me like i had 2 heads but said nothing. Then told me she can't ring this up because it doesn't have a code. Again silence for a moment. I said okay do you want me to go get another one? She says, yeah, and then she says, but you can take this one because it doesn't have a code on it. So in other words, she wanted me to go grab one that had a tag, but take the 1 that didn't have a tag on it which was fine but again wasn't explaining herself. Was just kind of staring at me blankly, was not very friendly. I told her I thought I had some rewards on my account and she was like, no, this account does not again, I said, okay, don't worry about it. Staring and silence again. I said don't worry It's no big deal just proceed. Then, the cashier next to me said something to her and she lit up with a smile and was answering her back jokingly then comes back to me with her blank, why do I have to deal with you Face. I just don't feel that's the way you treat people. I used to go to the Petco in laurel, but I moved so I've been coming here. I never once had a bad experience with the Petco in Laurel. And I also never had a fish die and I've bought several fish and snails from them. Half the time I come here, they don't have the equipment I need. And I have to go to laurel to get it. In fact, I had to go to laurel to find out what was wrong with my aquarium that I purchased here. I will assume because i'm a positive person that maybe I misread her and I will give them another chance but if I have any more problems with the store or the products I buy from here , I will not be returning period.

I went to the store to purchase a fish as a surprise for our son for good behavior. He picked out the fish that he wanted after we asked the questions about proper conditions, food, and interactions with other fish. Laura (store clerk) was not that thrilled to help us, but she did answer the questions when I asked. Once we chose the fish, she gathered all the things to get the fish and then asked us if we had a tank. We said we did and that my husband was setting it up now since this was all a surprise for my son. Laura went on to say that because our tank at home was not already set up and filtering that she was going to refuse to sell the $2.99 fish to us. When asked why she said that they have the “right to refuse sale” if they think that the fish is going to go to a home that will not adequately care for them. And because my tank was not already set up in filtering, she deemed it unsafe to sell. This could’ve been a great opportunity for education however, the tone and manner at which the store clerk Laura communicated with us was very condescending, mean, and one of the poorest examples of customer service I have ever witnessed- especially in a pet store. My six-year-old son with me and he was so excited as we walked into the store because he knew he had finally earned the fish that he wanted. Interestingly enough, there are Betta fish all over the store that are in little individual containers and not in a filtered tank. Laura was not a solutionist nor was she helpful in considering other options or lessening the blow for our ill-prepared situation. She used inflammatory language and weaponized store policy to make my son and I feel that SHE was in charge and we were not getting a fish. I maintained my cool and spoke to the manager, Steve, who printed a store policy for me. It did not say that we had to have a tank that was being filtered before the fish came home but it instead he highlighted the portion that said that they have the right to refuse sale of fish if they “feel like it’s going to a non-suitable home”. I don’t know if they screen everyone for this, maybe others can comment if this has happened to them. But this experience completely soured what would have otherwise been a memorable and exciting moment for my son. We will neverrrr go back to this store. Especially when Petsmart is right up the street (2 minutes away). We went there right afterward and we received the exact opposite customer service. We were met with respect and dignity which was completely missing at Petco under their current leadership. 9/21/25 5:30pm
