I had a very frustrating experience at Petco today while trying to purchase a couple of guppies. During a normal conversation with the employee, I mentioned that one of my fish had died about a month ago. Because of that single comment, they refused to sell me any fish unless I brought back a water sample — despite the fact that I clearly stated I regularly test my water. I care deeply about my tank and would never intentionally put an animal in danger.
What made this even more upsetting was that there were multiple dead fish-belly up in Petco’s own tanks at the time. It felt extremely hypocritical to be judged and denied a purchase for something that can naturally happen in fishkeeping, while their own tanks showed obvious issues. & they were deeming my tank to “not be safe”.
I love animals and take responsible care of them, and being treated like I was irresponsible or unsafe was insulting and unnecessary. I left and went to PetSmart instead, where I was able to purchase the fish I wanted without being made to feel like I had done something wrong.
Very disappointed with the lack of common sense, customer service, and consistency here. I won’t be returning.

I came into this Petco location today on 1/10 /2026. Needless to say, my experience was good as always I find that this location is very well kept up compared to other locations in the area. The aquatic section here specifically always seems to have really good care going on however, my review today is not about the care that they have because it’s great every time however I wanted to complement them on their patients with a customer they had today there was a young boy there with his grandparents, and you could tell the boy was extremely passionate about the hobby. He was naming fish. I’ve never even heard of before and one of the workers was walking around with him being very patient with his persistent questions. It was nice to see someone giving him the time and communication back to further his clear passion of the hobby even though the store was extremely busy at the time and his grandparents insisted they had to go multiple times. These workers were very patient in welcoming and that’s nice to see in a workplace because you don’t see that very often. Just wanted to compliment this location on their teams hard work you can tell that this location cares. Well done!

Have brought my dog here a couple times to be groomed with no issue. This time, they don't want to groom he as I let her coat grow out and now they are saying she's too natted and wouldn't be able to shave her close. I have brought her to the Petco in Middletown in the same condition with no issue. I normally do not write negative reviews because I always believe things can be worked out but I can't help but wonder if they just don't want to groom her. If that is the case just say so because there are plenty of other places around that will take her. Your mileage may vary and so may your experience but for me I'm going to pass on any future business here.

Honestly I only go to this PETCO because of a wonderful associate named Loretta. She’s fast, funny and so personable. She remembers my dog by name and really has the attention and detail that the store needs. Because of Loretta, I look forward to buying my dog $70 worth of dog food and treats!
