I can not stress enough how I will never recommend this place to take your animals to in an emergency, and will proactively tell people to steer clear of BVS. For the sake of transparency, I do want to say that the staff under the main doctor (specifically the technicians and assistants) were all extremely kind, and warm in my particular situation.
My issue is this - it genuinely felt as if the end goal was to sell me services vs offering the best advice for what I needed to do in my particular situation. It made me feel as if I murdered my best friend. Below I will explain in detail what I mean by this, and hopefully this will inform many other people moving forward in regard what to do with their own pets in an emergency situation.
My nearly fifteen year old cat that I have had just shy of ten years had an extreme decline in health and behavior. He went from completely normal, lively, energetic, and playful to extremely lethargic, not eating, not using the litterbox, and hardly drinking. This was shocking and unexpected because prior to this, he had never given me reason to believe I should be concerned with his health.
He was like this for two days, and on the third is when I took him to BVS. When I admitted him, I was told his condition was critical. He was extremely dehydrated, and very jaundiced, which would indicate something liver-related. I was told there were a litany of tests and things needed to initially treat him, totaling almost $900.00. The cost of those services is not my issue here, this is just context.
I fortunately had help to be able to cover at least this amount. It wasn't until after this that I was made aware from the main vet/doctor that my cat would require a two-night hospital stay to fully figure out what the issue was, and that this would run me between $3k-$5k. This was out of my price range. Please note that again, my grievances here are not that the costs were high for these particular services.
The main doctor, I do not remember her name, explained to me that by doing the overnight hospital stay, that this could reveal that my cat may have a very minor, very easily treatable issue, or that it could reveal something untreatable and beyond the scope of any sort of help. This is where we get into the main issue I had with BVS.
I essentially begged and pleaded with this doctor that given the fact that my cat is nearly 15 years old, and since a hospital visit could still reveal something about my cat that I couldn't fix, to just give me the hard news and recommend that I put my cat to sleep. The reason being so that I would not be totally haunted thinking that I chose the most extreme option for a minor issue - that I would not have basically murdered my best friend for no reason.
The doctor refused to tell me that putting him to sleep would be a more viable option, and would not say one option was better than another. That it was my decision. A conversation void of empathy. It very much came across like the goal of BVS was to sell services and make as much money as possible vs telling me, in their professional opinion, what the actual best solution for my companion was, especially considering that it's likely that they not only would have had to deal with this particular situation before, but probably many, many times.
I could have someone from BVS, including the doctor, explain to me how this was "protocol" or something like that, and that they aren't allowed to influence a decision like mine one way or another, but I would refuse to believe it's anything other than a half-hearted excuse, or maybe even a lie. I do not want to hear any reasonings for their decisions, as what's done is done, and I have to live with my choice to end the suffering of my animal, not knowing truly if this was the best choice, with no additional advice from a professional who's education and career pertains to house pets.
Please, I beg anyone to consider anywhere else for their pet emergencies.
