This is a very difficult review to write. I used to take all of my pets to Mishawaka Animal Care Center and genuinely believed they were the best vet in the area. I recommended them to everyone and was extremely grateful when they helped save my pug Daisy’s life after her diabetes diagnosis. Unfortunately, my experiences over the past few years have changed my perspective, and I no longer trust this clinic with my animals’ care. Here are the experiences that led to my decision:
• Unexpected and excessive charges
At one appointment, they suggested running updated bloodwork on Daisy, who had already been diagnosed with diabetes for about a year. I agreed, assuming it was routine. I was shocked when the bill totaled $1,200, especially because no one explained the cost beforehand or told me they were running such extensive testing. I would not have agreed to all of it had I known. Transparency about costs is extremely important, and in this case it was completely missing.
• Lack of urgency and guidance during my dog Junior’s emergency
The experience that ultimately made me leave occurred when my dog Junior ate a glove from my father‑in‑law’s garage. Unfortunately, he had a history of eating things he shouldn’t, so I knew this could be serious. The vet did an X‑ray, saw the foreign object, and assured me it would pass. They gave him medication and charged around $500, but I still felt uneasy.
The next day, around 4:30 p.m., Junior was clearly getting worse. I called the clinic and said I believed he needed surgery. They told me they closed at 5:30 and that I would have to take him to the emergency vet instead. I was devastated, but we went. The emergency surgery cost over $7,000.
A few days later, Junior began shaking. Worried there was a complication, I brought him back to Mishawaka Animal Care Center, hoping they could help since we had just spent so much at the emergency clinic. The vet did an ultrasound and saw fluid in his abdomen but told me they could not assist further and that I needed to take him back to the emergency clinic again — even though it was only 10 a.m. They informed me they “don’t do surgeries like that.”
At the emergency clinic, we were told a second surgery would cost another $8,000 and still only have about a 40% chance of success. We had no choice but to say goodbye to Junior. It was heartbreaking.
• The final breaking point
A few weeks later, while still grieving, I saw a post on Facebook of the vet performing surgery on another pet. It was extremely painful to see—especially after being told they “don’t do surgeries like that” during my own emergency.
I couldn’t return after that.
I have since found a new veterinary office that provides thorough care, offers emergency help when needed, and is far more transparent and fair with pricing. The difference in care has been significant.
Sadly, I can no longer recommend Mishawaka Animal Care Center.

My mom started going to Mishawaka Animal Care center back in 1999 before I was even born. So obviously as I got older and got dogs of my own, I followed suit. But after years of going here I have finally had enough. I have 3 dogs and am a good customer. However about a year or so ago I took my schnauzer to the vet because something felt off. I’m then presented with X-rays and the doctor telling me my dog is in active heart failure, his belly is full with fluids and he could drop dead at any moment. They also gave me meds for him on top of this. I was devastated to say the least. They referred me to Purdue small vet hospital where they specialize in cardiology. I was then told at the specialist that Max is in very earlier stages of a heart condition and that he does not need medications at this time, no fluid in his belly and his x-rays look better than what I was originally told, and to just monitor every 6-9 months. I proceeded to get all my dogs hearts checked at Mishawaka just to be safe and they charged me every dime they could. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I took my dog to the emergency vet on Sunday for 6 hours, the vet there tells me I need to go to my regular vet for second opinion after finding a mass under his tongue. I bring my dog that Monday to the vet and without checking the mass or doing anything except looking for a brief moment (didn’t even have him 5 minutes) Dr. Craig Anderson tells me I need to have my dog put down. I asked would a specialist help and he basically told me I can try but it wouldn’t be worth it. Later that day my dog turned his behavior around so I called the next day asking for meds I could give him to keep him comfortable until I could get him into this other specialist because I refused to give up hope. The specialist did extensive tests and a CTSCAN to tell me that my dog’s mass was completely gone. If I would have listened to Craig, my baby would not be here today. I can’t imagine how many other animals this has happened to. I want to help prevent this any way I can. PLEASE RETHINK GOING HERE.
