Chicago Equine Medical Center is a state-of-the-art veterinary and surgery facility near Chicago, Illinois. We are one of the few veterinary hospitals in North America committed to the health and soundness of race and sport horses while serving pleasure horses as well. Chicago Equine is comprised of highly trained veterinarians and staff dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating equine injuries and illnesses.
2 weeks ago I rushed my horse to Chicago Equine on a Sunday. They were tremendously helpful, available, and ready for us when we got there. Unfortunately the outcome was not what we expected; he had renal failure and we chose to euthanize. Chicago Equine was extremely understanding and compassionate. They sent his things back in a beautiful way that I'll always treasure.

They told me they wanted my thoroughbred eventer there at 0830 Monday morning to do a lameness exam because my local vet and I were stumped. I got up at 0500 to get him there by 0830 and when I unloaded him it was like I was dropping off my tractor. I had grain for him but was told they only feed hay and water. Stopped in the office and was told the vet would see him at 130 pm. I explained I wanted to watch the exam but was told there was nothing they could do. So I sat in my car for five hours and when I returned to the office I was told the vet got pulled away and my horse would be seen the next day. At $140 a night I wasn’t excited, but I needed him seen. After several calls the next day, I got a call from the vet who was as stumped as we were. He recommended a $2100 scan and I was that desperate. He also suggested he could have them feed a little senior. The scan was done on Thursday and he had to stay through the weekend as there was only a 2-hour window I could pick him up on Sunday. Because of that, they did say they would comp me two nights but they actually only comped me one. The scan was fairly inconclusive but did so a focal point that we assumed was the source of the problem. They had also done another lameness exam with a nerve block but I didn’t really hear about that until the next week. I rescued him on Monday morning. Their computers were down so they couldn’t give me a bill but assured me they would get the bill to me. Tuesday I found they had charged my credit card even though I had not seen a bill. When I called to ask for a bill for the charge they were fairly curt and said they would get me one. Thursday the bill came which is when I discovered the scan was considerably more than $2100 but I still had not gotten a discharge summary. I still didn’t really know what they had done or what they had found. My vet told me he had left a message for them to call him two days prior and he still had not heard from them. All in all I never felt I was anything but a bother to them. I spoke to a vet twice in a full week for about five minutes each time. My horse lost about 100 pounds. I dropped a lot of money and I did not get any answers. I will never be back.

My senior gelding came in as an emergency on Friday night with colic. Dr. Moreauw cared for him all weekend and the staff were so kind and got him through it. She sent pictures to keep me updated and called at least twice a day to keep me posted on how he was doing. I could not have asked for more! Very grateful!
