After waiting two full weeks for a grooming appointment, we brought our dog Dakota to the Petco grooming station in the South Loop, Chicago. Dakota was understandably nervous—it was her first time at this location—but she has been groomed countless times at many different facilities. She is a very sweet, gentle, and loving dog and has never attacked or harmed anyone.
During check-in, we were asked about her demeanor and were honest that she can be initially nervous. Less than five minutes after leaving, we received a call saying they could not groom Dakota because she was “biting and scratching.” This was completely out of character for her and honestly shocking. When we went back to pick her up and asked for clarification, we were then told she was mostly whining.
Any seasoned groomer knows that nervous dogs need patience, reassurance, and basic soothing techniques—especially during a first visit. It was clear that little to no effort was made to calm her or work with her. Instead, the appointment was abruptly canceled, wasting our time and energy after a long wait to even get on the schedule.
This experience was incredibly inconvenient and disappointing. If Petco is going to accept grooming appointments, they need to ensure they have experienced groomers who know how to handle anxious dogs with care and professionalism. The lack of effort shown toward such a sweet dog like Dakota was upsetting and frankly unacceptable. Based on this experience, this location earns one star.

We have scheduled grooming for our dog two times at this petco. The first time, the appointment was moved without any reason to why it was moved then the second appointment was canceled two minutes after our set appointment time because the grooming person wasn’t in the store. We walked in the second time, and they inform us that no appointment was even made though they are the ones that canceled the appointment. We asked why, they gave no response expect that the grooming person wasn’t there. Bad service and unreliable.

Worst grooming experience ever. I stopped going to Petco months ago because of this, but I recently needed a last-minute appointment since my regular groomer was out of town. That’s when I learned Petco had actually banned me from their grooming services.
The purple-haired stylist (I believe her name was Cynthia) rudely demanded that I clean up a mess that was clearly not from my dog. When I told her it wasn’t his, she became visibly upset and refused to groom him—without even looking at him—claiming he was “trying to attack” her. For context, my dog was under 1 year old at the time, under 15 lbs, and has never shown aggression toward anyone. Every other groomer he’s had has loved him.
It was obvious she was acting out of ego, not safety. Because of her attitude, my dog was refused and I was banned as a customer. I tried contacting the store manager and never received any response.
Extremely disappointed, but not surprised this location has a two-star rating. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

I recently purchased the Orijen canned stew and a Chicago Bears bandana from Petco, and everything was perfect. The stew is great quality—my dog devoured it immediately and seemed so satisfied afterward. The bandana is cute, fits well, and is perfect for game days. Easy checkout and great selection. Highly recommend!
