Peter was fantastic to work with. He took the time to really understand my tank and what I was trying to accomplish, and his advice was thoughtful, practical, and clearly grounded in experience. What I appreciated most was his enthusiasm and expertise, he focused on what would actually help my setup succeed long term rather than trying to sell me more than I needed. You can tell he genuinely cares about the health of the tanks and the success of the people he helps. Old Town Aquarium is fortunate to have someone like him.

I am brand new to this hobby and I’m completely lost, so when I went in asking for (very vague) help, Peter was so nice! He explained everything to me and even wrote down the plants I bought for future reference. I’ve been to like 4 other aquarium stores in the Chicagoland area and this store and setup looked nicer and more inviting. A lot of other stores also look like their tanks are so crowded and sad, but at Old Town, the environments just looked better and the fish happier in my opinion. 10000/10 for this store and definitely shout out to Peter for all his help! Will definitely be back.

Just stopped here over the weekend after coming from another local fish store and it’s safe to say this will be my one stop shop going forward. Upon arrival I was asked if I needed any help right away and boy did I have a list of 100 questions and i had the pleasure to ask those questions to PETER who had 101 answers with enough knowledge to back up every single answer. I am just a beginner getting into saltwater and I felt 10x better about it leaving this shop (along with two beautiful chocolate clownfish). Great selection of everything from equipment, to tanks, fish, and water. 10/10

Frequently Asked Questions About Old Town Aquarium

How big of a tank do I need for my aquarium?

We recommend selecting the largest tank that your space and budget can accommodate. Our clients consistently express satisfaction with larger tanks, while some regret choosing smaller ones. For personalized guidance on the ideal tank size for your specific needs, please contact our team of aquarium experts.

How many fish can I keep in my aquarium tank?

The number of fish your tank can support depends on various factors including tank size, shape, fish species, and filtration system. As a general guideline, freshwater aquariums can typically accommodate more fish than saltwater ones. For freshwater tanks, a common rule is one inch of fish per gallon of water. Saltwater tanks usually support about one-third of that capacity, with approximately 3 inches of fish per 10 gallons of water. These are rough estimates, and we recommend consulting with our experts for more precise recommendations.
