As first-time fish owners, we visited Pets at Home Bridgend specifically for advice. We originally planned on a small cold-water setup but were persuaded to buy a larger 40-litre tropical tank because we were told it would give us more options for fish in the future.
After following all the advice given, cycling the tank, and having our water tested and approved by staff, we were advised to buy four female bettas. We were specifically told that we could return later to add more fish and create a community tank. However, after doing some research and returning to the store to clarify, a different member of staff told us we should never have been sold four female bettas in the first place, that they shouldn't be kept as we had been advised, and that we couldn't add any more fish.
This left our three children extremely disappointed, as they had been looking forward to choosing additional fish for their birthdays. To make matters worse, when we complained, Pets at Home gave conflicting responses about whether the original advice was correct. The only solutions offered were to exchange fish that our children had already become attached to or add alternative fish, despite the tank already being stocked based on the advice we'd originally been given.
My issue isn't compensation—it's the inconsistent and contradictory advice. As beginners, we relied on staff expertise and ended up confused, frustrated, and no closer to the community aquarium we were promised. I would strongly recommend doing your own research rather than relying solely on the advice provided in-store.
