I am genuinely extremely disappointed by the reptile care and advice being provided at the Pets at Home Havant store.
My concerns started after I saw a TikTok showing a leopard gecko being purchased from this store. The enclosure the gecko was being kept in was essentially a tiny box compared with the space a leopard gecko actually needs. It had reptile carpet, only one hide, very little coverage or enrichment and, from what was shown, no clearly appropriate heating setup.
What makes this even more concerning is the advice the customer said they received from the employee. They were told that they shouldn’t add plants, logs or other coverage yet because it would apparently “overwhelm” the leopard gecko.
That is honestly some of the worst reptile advice I have ever heard. Hides, cover and enrichment are not something a leopard gecko needs to “grow into”. They are fundamental parts of providing a secure environment where a leopard gecko can hide and behave naturally.
And unfortunately, this advice has now contributed to the situation the poor animal is in. The buyer has taken this leopard gecko home and, according to what was shown, it is now living in a tiny enclosure with sand substrate, no clearly appropriate heating setup, barely any hides and essentially zero plant/visual coverage.
This is exactly why I have a problem with Pets at Home presenting employees as knowledgeable reptile specialists. Customers trust the advice they are given when buying an animal. If someone is being told that a leopard gecko doesn’t need additional coverage because it might “overwhelm” them, that customer is going to assume they’re doing the right thing by following that advice.
I contacted Pets at Home directly about this and was told that the appropriate animal sales process was followed, that the advice given was in line with their training and welfare standards, and that the employee involved is experienced and knowledgeable about reptile care.
That response honestly concerns me even more.
If this really is the standard of advice being provided by Pets at Home, then the training and welfare standards need to be seriously reviewed. An employee being experienced doesn’t automatically make the advice correct.
Leopard geckos are living animals with specific welfare requirements. They need appropriate space, suitable heating and temperature gradients, appropriate hides and plenty of usable cover and enrichment. They should also be housed individually.
I am not expecting every customer to have a £2,000 naturalistic mansion for their leopard gecko. I am asking for the basic welfare needs of these animals to be taken seriously.
A tiny sales enclosure with one hide and reptile carpet is already concerning. Giving a customer poor husbandry advice and then sending the animal home into an equally inadequate setup is even more concerning.
These animals cannot speak for themselves, so I will continue raising this until I feel that the concerns are actually being taken seriously. I sincerely hope Pets at Home reviews the Havant store’s reptile setups and the advice being given to customers, because these animals deserve considerably better.

Rude and abrupt. Faced a barage of abuse. Also overcharged. £55 for a puppy bath. Although I am a woman of 75 yrs old with health conditions and reminded them of such, they continued with abuse. I told them what I thought of them, paid the bill and left. Banned from shop for telling them what I thought of them.
