Unfortunately, we weren’t very happy with our experience when buying hamsters. We completely understand that staff need to make sure animals are going to suitable homes, and we have absolutely no issue with being asked questions about housing, care and enrichment.
However, despite explaining several times that we have owned hamsters previously and already had a suitable cage and enrichment ready, we felt extremely judged throughout the whole interaction. The member of staff repeatedly pulled faces and her manner made the situation feel quite hostile and uncomfortable, to the point that we nearly decided to leave without buying them.
We were also concerned that she didn’t seem confident in sexing the hamsters correctly and ended up asking the person she was training whether they knew, which didn’t give us much confidence.
I appreciate that she was trying to do her job and that Pets at Home has a responsibility to ensure animals are sold to appropriate homes, which I fully support. Unfortunately, it was the manner in which we were spoken to and treated that let the experience down. There’s a big difference between carrying out responsible welfare checks and making customers who are experienced and prepared feel judged and unwelcome.

The staff are friendly but trained poorly. Live food always dead.
Wrong information given out when selling small animals (hamsters)
And the fact in the holidays they hold "animal workshops" and wake up animals in the middle of the day. I know its only what head office has told them but still.
Again, the staff are lovely, its not their fault they arent trained up properly

Got a dwarf Hamster from them. Store staff Jamie helped us through out with cage, food, bedding and the specific branch was too excellent in customer service compared to Filton Branch. Thanks Jamie one happy customer with our new little cutie pie.

A bit disappointed our experience at this particular branch today. After doing extensive research we decided to get some fish to go in our musk turtle tank. The person that helped us used AI on google to check whether the fish were suitable to go in the tank after we had already said about doing research. We were then told as we were leaving to ‘do our research’. Rather frustrating as if you’re working in a pet store you should already be knowledgeable on keeping fish and various animals.
