Disappointing customer service – Pets at Home Lakeside (Thurrock)
I visited the store today to buy a harness and retractable lead for my French Bulldog puppy and, unfortunately, the customer service left a lot to be desired.
I couldn’t find the retractable leads because they were locked away, so I asked the cashier if they had any. His response was simply, “Probably.” When I asked if he could show me where they were, he said he couldn’t leave the till and that he would “try and get someone” to help me.
As a customer, that wasn’t a particularly reassuring response. I wasn’t expecting him to abandon the till, but I did expect a more positive attitude and a clear effort to arrange assistance. Instead, it felt as though helping me was an inconvenience.
Another member of staff came over fairly quickly, so there wasn’t a long wait. I asked him whether a harness I was holding, which was rated up to 15 kg, would be suitable for my 12 kg French Bulldog. His response was that he couldn’t advise without seeing the dog.
To be fair, I completely understand why staff might not want to recommend a specific harness without seeing the dog. That’s a sensible approach from a safety point of view, and I have no issue with that at all.
What disappointed me was how it was handled. There was no attempt to explain the different types of harness, offer any general advice, suggest how to measure my dog, or mention that I could bring him into the store for a fitting. The conversation felt abrupt, rushed and very much like I was inconveniencing him.
In the end, I spent nearly £50 in the store, but I left feeling disappointed rather than valued. I went to Pets at Home because I expected knowledgeable, friendly staff who would be happy to help customers choose the right products. Instead, I came away feeling like I was a nuisance for asking a few simple questions.
I’ll probably shop elsewhere in future, which is a shame because with just a little more friendliness and willingness to help, my experience could have been completely different.

Maddie was incredibly helpful today. We went in to get my dog some joint supplements and some wet food, and she helped me pick out some products and recommend me what she uses for her dog.
We had such a lovely chat and she was so knowledgeable in the products. I feel confident that I will come back to buy the supplements she recommend me (once the ones we use run out). Thank you so much again, you’re a star🤗💘
