As much as I am in shock and sorrow, I want to keep this review honest and factual.
This is the out‑of‑hours emergency service for my pets’ local vet, a 50‑mile round trip, classed as Chester but right on the Welsh border.
My 4‑year‑old beautiful Frug suddenly became very poorly. I took him to our local vet, where he was given pain meds but no diagnosis—just told to monitor him and return the next day. Within hours he worsened, so at 10pm I rang the OoH service and was told he needed to come in.
I had to drive 25 miles alone in the dark with a very sick dog. Finding the place was difficult, especially while stressed, crying, shaking, and trying to comfort him. When I arrived, I rang to say I was outside and was told they were very busy and we’d have to wait in the car.
30 minutes later a vet/ nurse unsure which came out, roughly lifted him from the car, and disappeared inside. I tried to follow but I was left in a scruffy reception area; his blanket was on the floor until someone silently picked it up and vanished. No greeting, no reassurance, nothing.
Eventually the vet/nurse returned and took me into a room. She rattled off information so fast my head was spinning. She said he had suspected IVDD Grade 4 (upgraded to Grade 5 in the morning), needed a neurology consult, and would stay overnight. It was very late. I was told to go home and to let them know by 6:30/7am what I wanted to do. Figures were mentioned—£4k, possibly £10k—but nothing was sinking in. I got home after 2am, exhausted and terrified.
First thing in the morning I rang for an update. The day vet/nurse seemed nice but immediately asked what I wanted to do because they needed to arrange the consult, MRI, and other procedures. I had to stop her to ask how my dog actually was. “No change,” she said. He’d had meds overnight. (£700 for a few hours and meds.)
I had already spoken to my own vet about somewhere closer, as the Chester trip was too much and I wasn’t happy with their uncaring manner. They recommended NWVS, only 15 minutes away. So I asked Chester for a referral.
This is when the tone changed. I was told I wasn’t thinking of my dog, that time was critical, and the vet/nurse even said, “I don’t care when he is treated.” She made the referral and TOLD me to collect him at 12:45.
The M56 was at a standstill, so it took me an hour, but I arrived at 12:47. Reception (Emily—lovely can't fault reception) checked me in, but again I waited. When my dog was brought out, the staff were unfriendly. I had to ask for his meds and blanket back; they couldn’t find the blanket and blamed me for “rushing” to make the appointment. We left without it.
Our appointment at NWVS was the complete opposite—amazing staff, compassionate, calm, no pressure. They even brought coffee and biscuits to the car while we waited. I arrived early, and they still treated us with care. They took care of everything even dealt with my insurance company for me.
Sadly, after his MRI, the neurologist confirmed his IVDD was too widespread, and I had to say goodbye. I’m broken. I asked my delay of a couple of hours had made it worse, and he assured me absolutely not—once at Grade 5, there is no further progression, so time was no longer a factor. (NWVS also quoted over £3k less.)
I was able to spend as much time as I wanted with my boy before kissing him goodbye and holding his paw as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
I will never use MiNight Vet in Chester again. It’s too far, and in an emergency their attitude and lack of compassion make it absolutely not an option.
This is the last picture I have of my boy, taken at NWVS just before his MRI. Sweet dreams, my gorgeous boy.
