Disappointed after what started as a great experience
This vet office originally came highly recommended by my dad — he brings his Brittany Spaniel here and has always spoken very highly of Dr. Sarah and the staff. Back in April, my older chihuahua, Doobie (9–10 years old), was having some muscle spasms. I couldn’t get in with his original Sarasota vet because of my new job, but my dad called Ellenton Animal Hospital and they got Doobie in same day. They treated him quickly, followed up afterward with a call to check on him, and overall gave wonderful care. I was very impressed.
Because of that, I decided to schedule both of my dogs — Doobie and my larger pitbull/boxer mix, Saks — for their annual exams and heartworm tests this November (11/1/25).
During the appointment, I let the vet tech know about Saks’ background and my concerns. I explained that he’s developed some separation anxiety and sometimes “mouths” at me when I leave — never hurting me, but it worries me because of his size. I also mentioned that he’s dog-selective due to being attacked twice by off-leash dogs in the past, but he lives peacefully with three other dogs at home and even boards well with small dogs at Hagan’s Pet Resort.
This was the first vet I’ve been to that took my dogs to the back for their exams. They took Doobie first (about 5 minutes), then Saks (over 10 minutes). When they brought Saks back, Dr. Sarah said both dogs looked healthy. Saks was laying on the floor, and I noticed the tech leaned against the counter, staring at him. He was making low gurgling noise — something he does when he’s bored and wants to play— and the vet immediately said he was being aggressive and told me to take him out to the car.
After I did, my dad stayed behind to talk to Dr. Sarah. She never addressed Saks’ anxiety or any of the concerns I mentioned to the tech. I had also asked about getting an estimate to remove a skin tag, which was ignored.
It’s now been over a week — no call about his heartworm or fecal test results, and no follow-up like I received last time. I paid a little over $400 for both dogs’ annuals and left feeling dismissed and disappointed.
I’m not sure whether the communication issue was with the vet tech or Dr. Sarah, but I won’t be bringing my pitbull mix back here. It felt like they were uncomfortable with his breed rather than taking the time to understand his behavior.

It is with heavy heart and passion that I enter this review. On October 22 we had to bring in our best friend Sirius to be euthanized. Upon arriving at Ellenton animal hospital, the entire front staff was so attentive to our needs and the comfort of our pet. We were immediately put into a room, a blanket was spread out on the table and kleenex within our reach. The tech or assistant was fabulous explaining the procedure and reassuring us we can stay as long as we needed. She gently took Sirius to be prepped for the procedure and brought him back to us to say our goodbyes. The Dr came in and was so caring and gentle and when it was done reassured us that we were doing the best thing for our buddy. Hugged us and with tears i. Her eyes told us to take as long as we needed.
A few days after the worst day of our lives, a beautiful card came in the mail. It was singed with notes from the entire staff.
The love and compassion exhibited by this group of people is the standard that every industry not just the veterinary industry.
Thank you everyone for making the worst day of our lives bearable.
I wish i could give 100 stars instead of 5.
