I am writing to express serious concern regarding both the treatment of an animal and the conduct of an employee at your 261 E 29th St Loveland, CO 80538 location. My experience on this visit raised significant questions about the quality of care being provided to the animals in your custody, as well as the professionalism of the staff. I visited the store with three others to meet a cat available for adoption. We were given time to interact with her, which we appreciated. However, when it was time for the cat to be returned to her enclosure, the handling we witnessed was deeply troubling. The 5‑month‑old kitten—already visibly nervous and reportedly rescued from the street—was grabbed firmly by the scruff and carried in that manner back to her holding unit. This method of restraint is inappropriate and unsafe for a cat of her age. According to the Humane Society, cats older than 12 weeks should not be lifted or carried by the scruff. At 5 months old (approximately 21–22 weeks), this kitten was well beyond the age where scruffing is considered acceptable. The Spruce Pets, a veterinarian‑reviewed resource, also notes that scruffing older kittens can cause fear, stress, pain, and long‑term trust issues with handlers. In this case, the kitten’s face was pulled back noticeably, and she showed clear signs of distress. She also had a visible scar near her right ear, which informed us that she had likely experienced trauma while living as a stray. Given this history, gentle handling should have been a priority. This incident also appears to conflict with Petco’s own Code of Ethics. On page 6, under the Animal Care section, it states: “As Petco Partners, it is our responsibility to promote the health, well-being and humane treatment of animals… We must consistently deliver safe, skillful and compassionate care to all animals entrusted to us.” What we witnessed did not reflect these standards. The employee who directed this handling, Dakota, also displayed concerning behavior toward her coworkers. Despite stating she had worked at this location for six years, she spoke to other employees in a manner that was rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. This created an uncomfortable environment not only for us as customers but also, it seemed, for the staff themselves. I am bringing this to your attention because I believe strongly in the importance of humane animal care and respectful workplace conduct—values that Petco publicly upholds. I hope that this incident will be reviewed seriously, that staff will receive appropriate guidance on safe and compassionate animal handling, and that steps will be taken to ensure a supportive and professional environment for both animals and employees.

Horrible experience. Came for the vetco clinic. They were an hour behind and the staff was incredibly rude. I ended up walking out. I will never return again. Save yourself valuable time and just go somewhere else. Girl with the red hair was rude and unprofessional.
