I chose Marlos Goldens because finding a breeder who cared about their animals was the most important thing to me, so I am deeply saddened to write this review. I know David will respond saying that I begged him to let me take his sick puppy home, that he wasn’t even going to show him to me, but these are not accurate statements. He introduced me to my dog (Bodie), then told me that Bodie was currently separated from his litter and on antibiotics because he had aspirated at 5 weeks and developed pneumonia. He said his vets assured him that the aspiration was a fluke, and that Bodie was “totally fine.” After I asked a few more questions, he tried to take Bodie away saying even though the dog was fine, he knew he shouldn’t have “shown” him. I did see another puppy, but Bodie was who I fell in love with, and after David’s constant reassurance that Bodie was absolutely fine, that was the puppy I selected. Over the next month, David continued to assure me Bodie was totally fine, and it wasn’t until the night before I picked Bodie up that my vet finally received his records and flagged all of the serious issues noted in them (megaesophagus being one of them). When I called David in tears, he continued to assure me that Bodie was fine, but said he would give me a puppy from another litter. I told him that if Bodie was fine, I wanted to take him home, but that I wanted reassurance that if it turned out Bodie was not actually fine and had any kind of lifelong, congenital issue, that David would not wash his hands of us. He said of course he wouldn’t.
Fast forward to 5 months later, David failed to provide vaccination records (he said his vet “lost them”), and Bodie has been diagnosed with segmental esophageal dysfunction, is cryptorchid, and cannot drink normal water for the rest of his life (he aspirates every time he tries). Thousands of dollars later, all I asked of David was a refund for Bodie so I could put it towards his extensive medical bills, and he refused. He blamed Bodie’s Interceptor medication, questioned all of the many vets/specialists I have taken him to, and personally attacked me. Worst of all, he has made no commitments to stop breeding Bodie’s parents (something all of the vets/specialists have said must happen).
I share all of this so that you do not make the same mistake I did, which was trusting David Marchand. I will be forever grateful that Bodie was saved from whatever fate he would have faced with David, but I worry that this will not be the last puppy born with issues. David will assure you that all he cares about is his animals, but his behavior, the things he overlooked when he had Bodie AND his total lack of accountability afterwards, prove otherwise. EDIT: Yes, it is correct that David paid $1,200 for x-rays (2 sets at $600 each). These should have been done as soon as Bodie completed his antibiotics for the aspiration pneumonia he developed in David's care, but they weren't. David made it clear all his vet did to make sure Bodie was healed was listen to his lungs. This is not the appropriate action for a 5 week old puppy with serious aspiration pneumonia + an enlarged esophagus. It wasn't until my vet got his records - the night before I picked Bodie up - that they flagged this. I requested that David pay for these follow up x-rays, as it was to confirm that Bodie's aspiration pneumonia + enlarged esophagus had fully resolved. He agreed. The first round of x-rays (done 8/7/25, 6 days after I took Bodie home) showed that Bodie still had a narrowed trachea and bolas on his lungs. We therefore had to do another round of x-rays 2 weeks after that, to ensure these issues had truly resolved. All of this was directly connected to the aspiration pneumonia that David and his vet failed to properly follow up on when Bodie was still in David's care.
I recently had the pleasure of working with David at Marlos Golden Retrievers, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the moment I first contacted them, their professionalism and dedication to their dogs were evident. It was clear that each dog was treated with care and affection.
David was incredibly knowledgeable, answering all my questions about breed characteristics, health testing, and the care of the puppies. They provided a detailed health record and were transparent about the lineage of the dogs, which reassured me about the quality and health of the puppy I was adopting.
The process was smooth, and I'm glad to have added Hopper to my family.
Overall, I highly recommend Marlos Golden Retrievers to anyone looking to add a new furry member to their family. Their commitment to ethical breeding practices and the well-being of their dogs is truly commendable.
