I've taken my cat to Banfield for many years and, in that time, there have been many issues. Only recently have I been able to get her medications filled without repeated visits (she has a permanent disability). Today, when contacting this location, the woman who answered the phone insisted my cat must come back in for an appointment before getting medications refilled repeatedly despite the fact that she had been seen before and had been given the medication before. After a contentious conversation, she relented to contacting the doctor for approval of my prescription. She then refused to hear which pharmacy I would like to have it picked up at. She said she would get the approval and contact me again for details. She called a different number listed on my account than the one I had called from. After not receiving an answer, she took it upon herself to have the prescription filled at their location. I called back in an attempt to get the medication sent to a closer pharmacy and was met with a rude and indignant tone from the employee that left me confused and befuddled. I would recommend using any other veterinary service or, at least, any other Banfield location. (Glendale, CO)

Formal Complaint – Banfield Pet Hospital (Glendale, CO Location) This review is intended to document my experience with the Banfield Wellness Plan and the services provided at the Glendale, CO location. I enrolled my dog in a Banfield Wellness Plan after being presented with a list of included preventative services and cost-saving benefits. At no point during enrollment was it clearly disclosed that heartworm medication coverage is limited by weight thresholds. As a result, I was later required to pay over $300 out-of-pocket for the appropriate dosage for my dog. Staff indicated there was “nothing they could do” and that coverage limitations were dictated by Banfield corporate policy. Subsequently, I learned from another Banfield location that an alternative heartworm medication option existed that would have been fully covered under my plan. This option was never presented to me at the Glendale location. Had I been informed of all covered options, I would not have incurred the additional expense. The failure to disclose covered alternatives raises serious concerns regarding transparency and informed consent in treatment recommendations. Additionally, the Glendale location requires routine exams and even basic vaccinations under the wellness plan to be conducted as “drop-off” appointments, often for half-day durations. This policy was presented as mandatory, despite these being routine preventative services. I later confirmed with another Banfield clinic that drop-off was not required and that standard appointments were available. This inconsistency between locations suggests operational practices that are not standardized and that materially affect client experience and oversight of care. More concerning is the quality of examination provided during a prior wellness visit approximately six months ago. Two days after a drop-off wellness exam, I discovered a golf-ball-sized mass on my dog’s hindquarters while bathing her. Upon returning to Banfield, the mass was confirmed and later diagnosed as cancer following biopsy. Given the size of the mass, it is reasonable to question whether a thorough physical examination was performed during the prior wellness visit. When surgical removal was recommended, the attending veterinarian stated he was not comfortable performing the procedure and referred my dog to an outside veterinary hospital. While referrals are sometimes appropriate, this directly undermined one of the primary financial benefits promoted under the wellness plan — discounted in-house procedures. As a result, I incurred significant additional expenses outside of the Banfield network. After these events, I contacted Banfield to cancel the wellness plan. I was informed that cancellation would still require payment of the remaining annual balance (approximately $280), regardless of my decision to seek care elsewhere. I was also told that the services received during the year were valued at over $1,000, despite the fact that only routine exams and standard vaccinations were provided. In summary, my concerns include: • Lack of full disclosure regarding medication coverage limitations • Failure to present fully covered medication alternatives • Mandatory drop-off policy for routine services at this location only • Questionable thoroughness of a wellness examination preceding a cancer diagnosis • Continued financial obligation under the wellness plan despite referral of care outside Banfield I am requesting that Banfield corporate review this matter, specifically regarding transparency in plan disclosures, consistency in clinic policies, and the enforceability of the remaining contractual balance under these circumstances. Pet owners considering a wellness plan should carefully review all limitations, coverage caps, and cancellation policies before enrolling. I welcome direct contact from Banfield corporate to resolve these concerns appropriately.

I’ve been going to the Banfield in Capitol Hill for 8+ years with no issues. Since the Cap Hill location closed I’ve been going to the Glendale location and they have left me feeling like my anxious cats are bad cats and that I’m a bad pet owner. For 8 years I’ve given my now 10 year old cat 100 mg gabapentin the night before and 1 hour before his appointment. At the Glendale location they waited hours after drop off to see him at which point the medication has worn off and they say he’s too aggressive to be seen. Then they said that I need to let them know to see him right away. Shouldn’t they know that he needs to be seen right away when I tell them that I gave him gabapentin for anxiety? Now they want me to give him 250mg of the medication which seems excessive for a 9 lb cat. When I brought in my new kitten, who was previously feral and very fearful of anyone but me, I scheduled an in-person appointment first thing in the morning. When I arrived they said that they were out of rooms so I needed to do a drop off visit. Again they waited hours to see him so his gabapentin had worn off and they did not complete the exam. When I picked him up the vet scolded me because he scratched her. If they had seen him right away and done an in person appointment we could have avoided any issue. I don’t think this location takes good care of fearful and anxious cats. I have cancelled my wellness plans and am looking for a new vet. Going to the vet will always be stressful for my cats but we don’t need the extra stress of waiting hours to be seen, coming back multiple times for a simple check up, or feeling like we’ve done something wrong.
