Got a 1-y-o pup from the shelter who is a barker. Petco had a special on the website. I was so excited to socialize him in a group setting, bond with other new dog parents in the neighborhood, and stoked that there were earlier classes since I'm vision impaired and ride the bus. Class 1 (xmas eve): we arrive and the trainer says class was canceled. Oh, and he decided to move us to a 1 on 1 in the evening since my dog is a barker. Come back next week. I explained im having a surgery in 6 weeks and chose this class so we could finish before then. Crushed, we left. Week 2, he seemed to be experienced, and my dog seems to already know commands from the previous owner. Week 3, he says he was going to bring his dog and a timid dog next week so my dog could learn to approach without Barking. I was very excited- this is where he needed help. All day I was excited, I took my pup out for an afternoon walk and come home to my phone an hour before class - canceled. "I can't do it today. You can come in on Monday or next week". What? Everything was at his leisure. This was not a class. I asked if the other dogs would be there. He seemed confused- no, just you. My dog wouldn't have graduated his class before my surgery at this point (with 3-6 week recovery). Aside from that, there was no consistency. I got a partial refund from petco, who didn't seem to discuss it with the guy, bc the following week I had a text "no class today?". This was going to be a warm up before real service dog training. Now I'm 4 weeks postop, back to square one looking for training.

I was transferred on the phone to a manager named Ruben and had a terrible customer service experience.
He answers the phone and while I am asking my question he interrupts me and says “let’s get strait to the point, do you need an appointment”. If you don’t have time or you’re overworked - then don’t answer the phone especially if you can’t keep your cool under pressure. This was not hospitality and when people get treated this way, they find another business to support.
Good luck Petco
