I took our dog to Banfield for what they call a “free consultation,” but it was nothing more than a trap. Our dog had a very obvious urethral prolapse, yet instead of addressing the problem or referring us to a specialist, they ran pointless tests and pressured her into signing up for a year-long wellness plan.
Without the plan, they told her the bill would be over $1,800. With the plan, it dropped to about $370–$380 — but now she’s locked into a 12-month contract that doesn’t even cover the surgery our dog needs. That surgery will cost another $1,500–$3,000 out of pocket. To make matters worse, when she asked about canceling, she was told she’d still owe $1,100.
It’s heartbreaking to watch my wife go through this while our dog is suffering. Banfield took advantage of her in a vulnerable moment, and it feels like they care more about locking people into payments than actually helping pets.
Read the fine print before you sign anything. This plan looks good on paper, but it doesn’t cover emergencies or surgery. If your pet dies, you’ll still be paying. Don’t let Banfield put you in the same position.

It’s a SCAM you better run , I came in for the "free consultation," but nothing is free it's just a trap. My dog had a very obvious urethral prolapse. Instead of being upfront and telling me I needed a specialist, they ran pointless tests and pressured me into their wellness plan. Without it, they said I'd owe $1,800+; with it, the bill dropped to about $370-$380. Now I'm locked in a 12-month contract I can't afford, and my dog STILL needs surgery that will cost $1,500-$3,000. This wellness plan does not cover you for emergency , surgeries and if your dog dies, you will still be stuck with the payment !
And make sure you read the fine print. According to them, this is what the wellness plan "covers" . It looks good on paper, but in reality, it's a trap that doesn't fix the problem your pet came in for.
Banfield will not cancel your plan all they’ll do is stop the auto-renewal next year. You’re trapped.
File complaints with the Better Business Bureau and your state veterinary board. Do NOT trust this company.

I want to be clear I'm not upset with the doctor or the staff personally. What upset me was the situation I was put in. When I brought my dog to the PetSmart/Banfield clinic, the whole visit felt unsettling. My dog, who is normally calm, was aggressive and barking during the appointment. Looking back, I feel like he was sensing something wasn't right. In that moment I was vulnerable and desperate for help, and I was pressured into signing a 12-month wellness plan. At the time it felt like the only way to make sure my dog got treated. Later, I realized the plan doesn't even cover emergency surgeries it's mainly for routine things like vaccines and basic tests. The way this plan is presented in urgent situations feels predatory, especially toward families who are already stressed and just trying to get their pets the care they need.
I don't blame the individual staff, but I do feel the system is designed to take advantage of people at their most vulnerable. I'm sharing this so other pet parents know to ask questions and read carefully before signing anything.

We have today booked online 3 ‘available’ Appointments for our sick dog in Orange County , California , and each one we turn up to advises us they never had an appointment available. Your staff tell us that your Corporate office have had many similar complaints but are doing nothing to solve this ridiculous problem…… if the appointment is not available just take it off the online available appointments- otherwise your staff will get further demoralized and clients will cancel and go elsewhere.
Yours unhappily,
Stephen, Norma and Abigail ( sad Maltipoo)

People here are very nice. However, the whole system is very disorganized. When we initially came in, the receptionist told us one thing. Then the nurse called an hour later told us something else. And when we picked him up, we were given a paper chart that explained something entirely different.
I'm sure they took good care of our Simba. But it just made the whole process seem less trustworthy.
