  We took our golden retriever in this morning to be groomed. We were told it would take approximately 2 hours. It took 4.5 hours and when we picked him up, they had shaved him. I actually did not recognize him. We brush him daily so it was not due to being matted. It’s as if they do not know what a Golden looks like and shaved him like all of the dogs they were “grooming”. We’ve gone there for years and it did not occur to me to say don’t shave him. Update: the store responded. No understanding of the breed so here. Petco, you need to know about different breeds before you shave them! He cannot go outside in this weather without shaking. You have made is natural ability to regulate in cold wet conditions impossible. You should not shave a Golden Retriever because their double coat acts as natural insulation, protecting them from both heat and cold, and removing it compromises their body's temperature regulation, exposing them to sunburn, overheating, and potential skin issues like hot spots or ingrown hairs, while also ruining the coat's texture and water resistance. Instead of shaving, frequent brushing to remove the undercoat and ensuring access to water and shade are better ways to keep them cool. Risks of shaving a Golden Retriever: Temperature Regulation Issues: The double coat insulates against heat and cold; shaving removes this natural thermostat, making it harder for them to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Sunburn & Skin Cancer: The fur protects their skin from harmful UV rays; shaving leaves skin exposed, increasing cancer risk. Coat Damage & Regrowth Problems: Shaving can permanently alter the coat, making it grow back thick, coarse, or patchy, and it may take years to recover. Skin Problems: Exposed skin is prone to dryness, infections, and painful hot spots. Loss of Water Resistance: The coat repels water; shaving removes this barrier, making them more susceptible to getting wet and cold.

  The store is well organized and the store manager is super nice. Customer service online? Not so much. Recently did a mini puppy grooming by Vanessa too at Petco and she did such a fantastic job. I will be going back for regular grooming here.

  The store in Alameda has a new payment machine and no longer takes debit cards. I would think they would want people to pay cash instead of credit. I understand upgrading your system but cash should be king even through a debit card!

  Miserable lady messed up my dogs scheduling for vaccines, as well as multiple other dogs schedules, massive inconvenience for everyone, while also being quite snappy on top of it all

  You charge the same price for a 15-lb box of cat litter as you do for the 25-lb box. That's not right. The same price for 10 pounds less? That's not right.
