  I hate to have to leave a negative review. This review is specifically for one of the Petco Groomers, Stephanie, and not the store as a whole. I brought my dog to the store to be groomed. My dog is a rescue and has not been to a groomer before. Admittedly, his fur is not in the best of shape (which is partially my own fault for not fully understanding the needs of this breed). Considering the circumstances under which he was rescued and how well he is doing otherwise, I think I’ve been a good pet mom. I was met immediately with a condescending and aggressive tone by Stephanie. I told her the dog has not been groomed before so that she’d know the dog may become timid, to which she aggressively responded “why hasn’t he been groomed before?” I could immediately sense a combative and judgmental tone. I responded he was a stray and that I did not fully understand the grooming needs of this dog and yes, I blamed myself. She then continued with “how long have you had him?” Again, this was clearly not a genuine question but one designed to cast judgment and clearly make me feel bad about not having professionally groomed him before. It was an uncomfortable interaction. She then went onto explain the parade of horrors my lack of attention to his coat could cause, including causing a “hematoma” (to which I’m not confident she knows what this actually means) in an attempt to scare and shame me. Look, I get it and can acknowledge maybe I did not do my best in getting my dog groomed sooner. But, the issue is that Stephanie decided it was appropriate to address me in this way and make me feel like the worst pet parent who ever lived. The problem with Stephanie’s attitude is that LOTS of people might not be able to groom their dog as often as truly needed for a VARIETY of reasons including prolonged illness, finances, etc etc. I have a problem with her making assumptions and her attitude will deter people from actually wanting to seek out routine care. This is not acceptable. Stephanie refused to groom my dog because his matting is “severe” (it’s not). Maybe Stephanie would prefer I had not tried at all or left the dog as a stray. Needless to say, I will not be coming back and I would encourage others in similar situations to seek elsewhere lest you be comfortable with being shamed by the Petco Dog Groomer. I certainly hope this is not reflective of Petco’s customer service philosophy. Thanks for reading my review.
