I took my daughter today to buy a beta fish. Dion helped us from start to finish! He was so knowledgeable. Taught us so much and helped recommend things for our aquarium. Instead of buying one beta fish we went home with a whole sorority. I had no clue you could put females together but to watch the red tails. Dion was awesome! 10 out of a 10 experience! Thank you so much for the help Dion!

I have been coming to Petco for years and a Rewards member since 2014 and so happy to see a wider selection of fish that I rarely see in big retail stores. Not only that but Dion has been really helpful and very knowledgeable whenever I have a question about anything fish related. Looking forward to more exotic selection of fish and plants!!!

I made an appointment for my dog to be groomed. My daughter was dropping the dog off on her way to work. She mistakenly took her to PetSmart instead. When she realized her mistake, she ended up 11 minutes late for our appointment. She was told the appointment had been cancelled and they refused to groom her. Since we live 30 minutes away, this caused my daughter to be late for her job. I could totally understand if the grooming took 15-30 minutes but when she’s usually there a few hours, I don’t understand that being late 11 minutes would justify cancellation of the appointment.

I’ve been to this Petco twice this week, and both visits were unbelievably frustrating in completely different ways.
Visit #1:
I came in to get new tags made for my dogs. I picked everything out, went to checkout, and the employee was actively explaining how the code on the receipt works for the engraving machine. Sounds great, right? Except the second my payment went through, she suddenly “remembered” to tell me the engraving machine was down.
So let me get this straight… no signage, no warning, full explanation of how the process works… and only after I’ve paid do I find out I can’t actually use the product I just bought?
Naturally, I asked to return them since they were useless to me at that point. I was then told I’d have to wait up to seven days for a refund, and cash back was not an option. That’s unacceptable. If a core piece of equipment is down, there needs to be clear signage so customers aren’t buying products they literally cannot use.
I ended up leaving and going to PetSmart instead. When I mentioned the situation, their staff said something along the lines of, “Yeah, we hear that all the time. People call us asking if our machine works because theirs usually doesn’t.” That says a lot.
Visit #2:
Against my better judgment, I came back later in the week to look at starfish. When I walked in, there was water pouring out of the goldfish tanks onto the floor. Not a small leak. I’m talking full-on flood.
I alerted the nearest employee (we’ll call her “Purple Hair” since I didn’t catch her name). Instead of handling it professionally, she screamed “ROY!!!” across the store and ran over. When Roy arrived, she proceeded to absolutely chew him out right there in front of customers.
It was uncomfortable, unprofessional, and honestly embarrassing to witness. No employee deserves to be treated like that publicly. It created a really hostile environment, and as a customer, it made the whole situation feel chaotic and poorly managed.
After that, Roy came over to help me and my son with questions about starfish. He was the only bright spot in either visit. He was knowledgeable, efficient, kind, and clearly doing his best despite the situation. That man deserves a raise for both his customer service and his patience.
Bottom line:
Petco needs to do better. Better communication, better management, and better treatment of employees. Because right now, it’s the staff like Roy holding things together while everything else falls apart.
