Some of the things I’m about to say are secondhand things my wife told me about her awful experience today, and I’m inclined to believe her because she wouldn’t have a reason to lie, but I wanted to say that in the interest of transparency.
My wife took our cat, Sophie, in for an appointment with Dr. Pete Johnson today and it could not have been a worse experience. We were wanting to establish care here in Arkansas after recently moving from Idaho. Sophie is older and does struggle with some separation anxiety, especially when my wife is not around. A sign in their lobby said to leave her in her carrier upon arrival, so she couldn’t “establish her territory.” When it was time for her exam, Sophie was taken back to a room without my wife, completely isolating her with new people and new surroundings. Maybe this is protocol, but that seems strange, we have never encountered that before.
After a short time, Dr. Johnson came into the room and asked my wife if our Idaho vet ever sedated Sophie for exams. My wife informed him that all they did was wrap her in a “towel taco” and sort of hold her down and trim her nails and examine her that way. Dr. Johnson’s comment was “well, it is Idaho.”
Another short wait later, Dr. Johnson came back in and said he was gonna give us some Gabapentin for her. My wife explained that we have tried that in the past, both liquid and pill form, and never had success. Dr. Johnson basically dismissed her and said he was giving us Gabapentin anyway.
Dr. Johnson returned to tell my wife that they were not going to do anything with Sophie because she was “hissing, swatting, and biting at” his team. He said they “finally got her carrier open and she hissed so they closed it.” He proceeded to essentially blame my wife for allowing our vet in Idaho to use the “towel taco” method and blamed Sophie’s behavior/anxiety on that. Mind you, our Idaho vet, called The Cat Doctor, exclusively works with cats. That’s all they do every single day.
Ultimately all we got out of the visit was Gabapentin we won’t be able to use and frustration. Dr. Johnson dismissed every single concern my wife had and basically said Sophie was too bad to treat. He was also quick to blame the entire state of Idaho for their perceived ability to treat animals.
I would be weary against using Dr. Johnson for any cat related issues. He seems to be a quick trigger to sedate animals for their alleged “aggressive” behavior. I say alleged, because again, Sophie was completely isolated from my wife, so who knows what actually happened. We will not be back, and will be seeking better treatment from a more compassionate provider.
