We were referred to Dr. Weinstein by our primary care vet, Dr. Lusk (Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital). To be honest, I thought a consult with a surgeon seemed like a wild next step when we'd only brought our dog, Lucky, in for a general wellness check to establish care and have him sedated for an oral exam since his breath was pretty bad despite a recent dental cleaning. We lost our dog, Rocket, to a malignant melanoma in his mouth that was discovered during a routine dental cleaning, so when Lucky's breath was stinky like his was, we were concerned.
Dr. Lusk recommended a surgery consult on a Friday, when Dr. Weinstein was off. He was going to squeeze us in on Monday but we were so shell shocked we had some questions about whether this was all necessary and minutes later we got a call from an unknown number - it was Dr. Weinstein late on a Friday afternoon...calling because his office said we had some questions.
When we met with him the following Wednesday (so we could do the ultrasound and consult the same day) he was direct. Matter of fact. Yet also empathetic to the fact that our heads were spinning. When we asked about chemo he reeled us in and said: "We'll talk about that if it comes to it." He gave us a ballpark, so we would have our bearings as to cost for surgery, and chemo, if needed, but told us to take it one step at a time.
Dr. Weinstein is a specialist without an ounce of the ego that you expect from someone who has poured decades into their medical career. His bedside manner is reassuring - his flippancy towards wasting any energy worrying about things that have yet to come to pass makes you pause as well. I'm honestly not sure how to accurately capture what a special human being he is, except to say that he seems like the kind of person who, if you were friends, would show up with exactly what you needed when you needed it without ever asking him for anything. And when you tried to thank him, he would brush you off because in his mind it was nothing more than the obviously right thing to do.
A week and a half after surgery, Lucky crashed. We rushed him to VEG on South Lamar at nearly midnight Saturday night. His red blood cell count was 6. He received multiple blood transfusions.
I emailed Dr. Weinstein at midnight. While we were still at the first emergency room my phone rang before 8 am - it was Dr. Weinstein. On a Sunday morning. I could hear his family in the background. He wanted to know what was going on. He wanted the test results. He wanted updates. He explained what the ER did not: Why it made sense to transfer him. Where we should take him. What an Internal Medicine Specialist would do.
When we were so wrapped up in everything and didn't update him for more than 24 hours, Dr. Weinstein called US asking for updates. He reviewed all the test results I emailed him and explained them. HE checked in. HE reached out. Not once. Not twice. Not three times. But over and over and over again. From the car. From work. From the grocery store (I know what the checkout line at HEB sounds like!).
In my experience, the people you deal with in these situations can often seem callous or jaded or indifferent to this being one of the worst moments of your life because for them it's just a Tuesday. We never once felt that with Dr. Weinstein.
I hope you never need his services, but if you do, know that your fur baby couldn't possibly be in better hands.
(Side note: Can you believe this ridiculously cute bag the staff made for Lucky?!)

Dr. Treuil and his staff have been nothing short of accomodating and kind during my entire experience in dealing with them. My pup underwent radiation treatment initially back in December 2025 and they not only the most economical option I came across regarding treatment with an oncologist, but the level of care for my pet....the customer service was extremely on point. And the treatment worked! Unfortunately, remission only lasts so long and I went right back to them to inquire about following up and I was taken care of immediately and with the same level of care I experienced previously. I've read some negative notices on this thread and I don't discount anyone's previous experience. This is a business that has to deal with extremely sensitive situations and very sensitive times in people's lives and largely, insurance doesn't cover what we need for our pets. I'm fortunate enough to have the means to cover the expenses, but what I will say is VCA was extremely accomodating to my circumstances when other oncologists I approached definitely treated me as a cash grab. I usually don't write reviews, but felt compelled to put in a good word to support a local business as is typical here in Austin. When I see good people doing good work, especially during a time of hardship for me, I'll do what I can to spread the good word. Thanks again to the team at VCA for taking care of my pup and giving her an extension to her life, I'm forever grateful for your work and efforts.

Dr Strottner and Dr Weinstein took such amazing care of my sweet Coopie Cat. He woke up with a golf ball sized tumor on his hind leg and they were so fast to act. He had to have an emergency amputation from how aggressive the tumor/cancer was. I don’t know how anyone could do their job, but they do it so well and with such empathy. I would 1000% recommend them.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about every person on this team. We found out in June my 9 year old Bernese Mountain dog has cancer. We were recommended to Dr. Weinstein by our primary vet. From the first moment we met with him, I knew we were in good hands. He explained everything thoroughly and even caught a heart arrythmia before getting surgery. The cardiology team was able to stabilize her heart and were SO communicative during the entire process.
Dr. Weinstein provided us with resources to help with funding, let us know he was always available via email, and truly made a super scary situation feel less scary.
Fast forward to her surgery day, the nurse, Travis, made us feel so comfortable dropping her off letting us know he would be with her until 6 PM and answered my 100 million questions. Her surgery was so quick and Dr. Weinstein then called us again with an update on how it went.
That night we received an update text message from the nurses Jessica and Travis with a picture of our girl.
When picking her up, Fame gave us an incredible rundown of how everything went, very clear instructions on how to take care of Sadie post op, and once again, answered my 100 million questions with patience.
We even got a hand painted bag all the nurses signed and a little stuffed toy.
I truly cannot thank this team enough for not only their exceptional care but the customer service aspect as well. It is heartbreaking to hear your dog has cancer, but this team truly goes above and beyond to make it as painless as possible.
Thank you all so much. We are so thankful for you all!

We’ve been so happy with Dr. Strottner and her team. They are exactly who we want to partner with to care for our dog. They are responsive, compassionate, and do a great job explaining what’s happening. We know we are in great and supportive hands during a very difficult process.
