  We would have given VCA 5 stars had we felt that our overall healthy, energetic, and fully vaccinated 3-year old cat received a more aggressive and immediate treatment during her first ER visit ( September 18) to address her refusal to eat or drink and severe dehydration after close to 24 hours due to continued and suspected diarrhea/urinary infection with clear mucus (confirmed by us later during the 2nd visit on the next day that it was diarrhea). However, to our surprise, we were told by Dr. Carrica that she was not dehydrated. She was sent home with us that evening without receiving any treatment. Blood work was offered during the 1st ER visit and should have been emphasized why it was needed/strongly recommended, to help us make a more informed decision about the next steps rather than us opting not to do so. Our cat's conditions deteriorated the next day (September 19) and we brought her back to VCA ER to see the same doctor ( Dr. Carrica) for the 2nd ER visit. Blood work was done during this visit and anti-nausea as well as probiotics medications were prescribed, with an option of hospitalization (without an emphasis that it was indeed very necessary). Therefore, we opted to bring the cat home and administered the IV and medications ourselves as approved by the doctor. Had we were fully informed and made clear of an urgency of medical intervention including a very necessary hospitalization, we would not have opted out and may have had a better chance to save our cat. Our cat's conditions continued to deteriorate and we had to bring her back to VCA ER for the 3rd time (September 21). This time we happened to see a different doctor, Doctor Z, who emphasized the urgency of aggressive intervention. Being fully informed this time, we decided to have our cat hospitalized as well as referred to the internal medicine specialist, Dr. Ryan, for thorough investigation and treatment options. Very sadly, since this was the 3rd and 4th visits with 48 hours or more had passed without prior aggressive treatments, our cat passed away in the evening of September 22. We were left questioning if our cat would have survived if things were done differently within the first 24 hours during our first ER visit. We would not have deeply regretted our cat's passing knowing that we had tried all the options being fully informed and aware of the severity of her condition. Nonetheless, we would like to thank the technicians and care team during our cat's hospitalization. Specifically, we are very grateful for the compassionate and thorough care our cat received from Dr Z and and Dr. Ryan. We wish our cat saw them sooner so that she may have had a better chance of survival even if we still had doubts about possible underlying issues that may have led to her passing. We deeply regret what had happened and the tragic sudden loss of our beautiful loving cat.

  I honestly can’t say enough good things about our visit with Dr. Ryan. It was probably one of the best experiences I’ve had with a medical professional, human or veterinary. He took the time to listen to my concerns, answer a lot of questions, and explain what was going on with my dog in a way that made sense. At no point did I feel like he was watching the clock or trying to rush us out the door. His compassion and the time he spent with us meant a great deal to me. I also want to mention Jesse, the fourth-year veterinary student who took the initial history and examined my dog. He was knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate, and did a great job making both my dog and me feel comfortable. When you’re worried about a pet you love, having people who actually listen and seem to genuinely care makes a huge difference. I left feeling like my dog had been treated as a patient, not just the next appointment on the schedule. I really appreciate the care we received from both Dr. Ryan and Jesse.

  On Labor Day my baby girl woke up with labored breathing, we took her to this VCA and were treated with the utmost care. In the end we ended having to euthanize our puppy, but the team was the best to work with. Dr. Russman was incredibly kind and caring going above and beyond with her emotional support. Leighton is a good hearted man with strong sense of empathy, and Mikol helped us out beyond what was necessary. To each of the people who helped that day, I thank you highly.
