Something changed a few years ago. We used them for a dog and two cats. When first cat had to be put down, they were great (Dr. Payne). One afternoon I called 10 minutes before they closed with an emergency, bring him in, we will see him at closing. Front desk acted like they knew you. Vets and techs were, and probably still are great.
Unfortunately our dog developed some medical issues, he was on several pills, morning, evening, let's add this one. One afternoon I came home to find drops of blood around the house. I freaked out, called them, "I know you close in an hour, I can be there in 15 minutes." They offered me an appointment the next day. I can be there 45 minutes before you close the front door, "no, we can get him in at 10:00 tomorrow." Best advice they gave me was an Urgent care, after hours place in Bedford, connected to a vet practice. They saw my dog that day just after 5, was a longer drive, and shortly after switched vets.
We did have both our pets records sent down from VCA, unfortunately the numbers from blood tests did not get sent. They did a senior panel at the new vet, said "Kidney failure, other values off, but we can't see past numbers so can't see if these are slow changes we don't need to be too concerned about, or if these are more steady conditions we just need to keep an eye on. They did get written records, but some data was not sent, or they could not see.
For 10+ years they were great, we drove past several vet offices to get there, recommend them to friends. But looking back toward end of our time, visits got rushed, phone calls from vets took longer to be returned, vets bounced around so you no longer had a vet who saw your pet, but one of their team (we had no real preference, vet probably didn't remember us or the pet, but seeing the same face every year felt right). Focus seemed to shift from "we care about your pet" to "you are one of the 1,000's of pet owners we serve, take a number."
It hurts to write this, vets and techs were top notch, Annette at front desk was very helpful and friendly. Don't know if it was joining VCA, some of the old vets retiring, or something else, but started to feel different in last few years, and when they could not squeeze in one dog, in a not CAVES level issue, in the last 45 minutes of their day, I was upset. Our new vet not being able to see some test results in the records sent was disappointing. They are great people, seem to really care about their patients, but something seems to be pushing their business model in the wrong direction.
