Geek Squad is a SCAM
I've bought all my laptops (myself and 3 college students) from Best Buy including several appliances. Last summer I bought my middle son an HP Omnibook Laptop for college. A year later (2 weeks ago) his laptop displayed a Bitlocker Recovery screen. Knowing that the factory warranty was probably expired, I took his laptop to Geek Squad located in Hattiesburg MS on Thursday August 13, 2026. I was told by the Geek Squad techs that Windows would have to be removed and reinstalled and that it would cost $198.00 for this service. The Geek Squad tech then asked if i wanted to enroll in one of their protection plans for just $1 dollar more that would cover repair for 1 year and would cover this current issue. "Sounded" like a no brainer, so I signed up for this plan. I was told by the Geek Squad tech(s) that it would take 48 hours max to fix my son's laptop. The next day Friday 8/14/2026 at 1:49 pm I received a text stating "Your device is ready". Since my son had already left Hattiesburg on his way home, I told him to pick up his laptop when he goes back to Hattiesburg for school on Sunday before the start of class on Monday 8/17/2026. When he got there he was told by Geek Squad techs Kiddie and Cody that the laptop was never fixed because the laptop would not boot up after doing whatever they did to it. After the techs did some "digging" they said the laptop had a system board failure and that the hard drive would need to be replaced. This was going to cost $85 dollars just to ship the laptop out for repair not including the cost to replace the hard drive. When I asked about my new protection plan to pay for all of this, I was informed by Kiddie and Cody that my plan doesn't cover any work that would require having to ship the laptop out of their store for repair. This is a SCAM. They can deem anything not repairable in house just to scam more money out you or get you to buy another laptop. By the time I've paid for a useless $200 warranty, along with $85 shipping fee in addition to $100-$300 for a new hard drive, I could've bought a new laptop. Which is what they want.
DO NOT USE GEEK SQUAD FOR ANYTHING. Red flag was when the techs started sounding more like sales rep then being interested in what's going on with your devise. What started out as being a simple fix for a somewhat common issue, turned out to be a money grabbing SCAM. This laptop was just 1 year old. I asked for a refund on this "Protection Plan" and I'm sure that's not gonna happen. Instead of sending a text stating that my device was ready for pickup, they could've called and told me about this issue instead of being surprised at the last second. People work too hard for their money to be SCAMMED.
PS, from my understanding Windows 11 Home is not supposed to have a Bitlocker Encryption. Only the professional version

Call first to see if they have the part needed to repair your tech! Also, pricing on the Apple support website is not accurate. The website says $160ish for a back glass replacement and this place is trying to charge $200. I walked in, they said they had the part, then came back to say they actually didn’t have the part and they’d have to keep it for 3 days. Excuse me? If I’m paying $200 today, I’m not leaving my phone. Paying for the entirety before even placing the order for the part leaves them with no liabilities. What’s gunna happen? I don’t show up to get it replaced? Well y’all would already have my money in full. I live alone and in a not so safe area, so yea, let me just leave the only resource I have to contact emergency services. That is ridiculous. Even Apple support representatives said it didn’t make sense.
