My MacBook Pro purchased in 2020 quit working while I was visiting family in Chicago. It worked the night before and I had plugged into charge, unplugging before bedtime. I went to the Apple Store and was told it would be $700 for a repair that may or may not work. Since that is 1/2 cost of MacBook Air, that would be better option. My data was toast, unless backed up to the cloud, because it is part of the logic board.
Unfortunately I did purchase a MacBook Air.
After returning home, I took the MacBook Pro to a local computer shop to see if they could recover my data . They found the problem was a short circuit in the power circuitry which they repaired. My data is not lost! The cost of the repair was quite a bit less than what Apple quoted me. Apple has no interest in helping you to save your data or repair your machine. They only want to sell.

Despite the uproarious surroundings, STEPHANIE'S attentiveness made me feel like I was the only person in the room! She clearly explained to me the details of my repair warranty+helped me to find a case for my Ipad to prevent another screen catastrophe. I appreciated her sincerity and customer service acumen.

Visited the genius bar for an extended warranty phone battery replacement yesterday. At first I was a little irritated because I had trouble finding the store (it's across from Macy's in front of the outdoor fountain btw if anyone is having trouble finding it!). Thankfully the staff were all super friendly, helpful, and the overall atmosphere had great vibes. Even though I ended up being super late for my appointment because I struggled to find the store, they still repaired my phone same day! They gave me an estimated pickup time of 2 hours after the diagnostic which was a lot quicker than I was expecting. They also had plenty of empty tables with charging stations so I could use my macbook while waiting, definitely recommend bringing yours to keep you occupied if you're visiting for a phone / ipad repair.

This store completely wasted my time and turned what should have been a simple speaker issue into a week-long nightmare.
I drove 50 minutes to the store for help with my phone. Instead of leaving with my issue resolved, I left with my phone completely erased, no clear communication about what had happened, and was lied to about the next steps of the recovery process. As a result, I have been locked out of my phone for days and have had to spend additional time trying to recover access.
From the beginning, I told both the first representative I checked in with and the technician that I did not know my Apple ID password. At the time, I was already in a system recovery process that would have allowed me to change my password within the next hour. I only had about 25 minutes remaining before I would have been able to complete that process and regain access to my phone.
Instead of simply setting my phone aside and allowing the recovery process to finish, the technician chose to perform a factory reset in an attempt to bypass the waiting period. Had they waited the remaining 25 minutes, I likely could have regained access without having my phone erased. It appeared they were trying to move quickly rather than follow the proper process, and that decision resulted in all of my data being wiped.
As you can imagine, losing my phone data was incredibly frustrating. I suddenly had no access to my contacts, messages, access to money or other important information that I rely on every day. I also started a new job this week and had literally all of my messages and point of contacts in my phone.
Manager Angel then told me to come back to the store after 24 hours because Apple would supposedly send me a link that would allow me to change my password. I was very angry about the 24 hours, but he made it seem like it was something as simple as a link I had to wait on. I came back the following day, After making another 50-minute trip back to the store, I learned from Apple Support that this information was incorrect. The 24-hour period was only to determine how long I would have to wait before being allowed to reset my password—not to receive a link that would solve the issue.
Because of the misinformation and lack of communication, I have missed work, disrupted my schedule, and spent hours traveling back and forth with no resolution. I still have a speaker that is messed up and initial issues still aren’t fixed.
What made the experience even worse was the lack of ownership and follow-through. The manager made it seem like I would be paired with a technician who could help me understand my options and next steps the following day. Instead, the technician walked away to assist someone else and sent two other employees to speak with me. He never followed up with me directly ending the process and simply left me with the message that there was nothing they could do.
I am extremely disappointed with how this situation was handled. Better communication, proper training, and a willingness to slow down and follow the correct process could have prevented all of this. I would have gladly waited an extra 25 minutes if it meant my phone would have been handled correctly and my data would not have been erased.
This experience ruined my week, disrupted my plans, caused me to miss work, and cost me significant time and effort. It is easily the worst experience I have ever had at an Apple Store. I will not be returning to the Oak Brook location and will be using the Michigan Avenue store moving forward.
Apple customers trust employees to handle their devices carefully and provide accurate information. Unfortunately, that did not happen here. The lack of communication, poor judgment, and misinformation turned a minor repair visit into a major inconvenience that could have been avoided.
