Sharing this to help other owners be informed about outright negligence happening at this location. We adopted a dog from the shelter. She had worms. They did not treat my dog for worms because they said she was already being treated from the shelter. Followed up with another vet who told us the medication she was on would not treat tapeworms and therefore, was not being treated the entire time. One shot later from this vet and my dog was cured. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE. There is a full explanation in a review below, would not let me post in 1. When we adopted Moose (our new dog) from the Humane Society, there was a concern among the shelter staff that she might be getting over a bit of kennel cough from the shelter and the shared environment and stress of that place. Our other dog is also vaccinated against this so we moved forward and adopted her, however this made it more of a priority to get her initial exam done because we wanted to make sure she was being monitored. After I scheduled her appointment, which was the day after we adopted her and it was scheduled for the following Monday, we noticed white worms in her first bowel movement that first Monday. She also had small rice-like segments visible on her fur on her little butt, as well as dried droppings around her bedding area. When we took Moose to the VCA one week later, we brought them a stool sample, as well as her MEDICAL RECORDS from the shelter. They did a full exam on Moose. The worms were a more lengthy discussion. The veterinarian that examined my dog said that Moose was probably fighting 2 different types of worms. She said verbatim that the white worms in the stool were hookworms or roundworms that were being pushed out of her system by the dewormer. She also confirmed verbatim that the rice-like segments on her butt (literally visible at the visit) were tapeworm segments. So we had a multiple worm infection. She USED HER EYES AND READ HER MEDICAL RECORDS AND TOLD ME that Moose was being treated for the worms and needed until May 19th for the treatment to be effective. We agreed we didn’t want to over do it with medication for Moose (she is only 24lbs) and we would give the medication time to work. They also informed me that Moose (age 3) needed a booster for her Distemper/Parvo vaccination. My partner and I went to Tucson for a free vaccination clinic they hold for the public last weekend. When we took them to the clinic and explained our situation, as well as Moose’s worm issue, the vet that was helping us looked at Moose’s paperwork from the Humane Society and told us that the medication she was on for worms is ONLY effective for hookworms/roundworms and would NOT work for tapeworms which is what she had. She did one exam on Moose, looked at the sample we brought and gave Moose a single injection. The following morning, she had no worms present in her stool as is consistent with the medication because it liquifies the worms in their system so they can pass. The medications for the worms do sound similar to a layman, I would even have to navigate from this review to include the names of the medications but I shouldn’t have to because vets know this information. They deworm constantly. The bottom line is that the VCA knew Moose wasn’t being treated for tapeworms and still sent her home for almost 2 weeks with another dog at home, all so they could swindle us for money for an unnecessary stool sample and charge us for medication that should’ve been covered by the shelter anyway. The vet in Tucson also said she doesn’t need a booster because she’s not a puppy and it’s a yearly shot. It was honestly refreshing to actually talk to a professional that cares about animals. Maybe you guys should hire people like that. We canceled our appointment for this past Tuesday so quickly and we will never be back. Don’t take your animals here. They just want your money. They don’t care. They KNOW and they still don’t care.
