  I’ve been a long-time Cricket customer in Alaska, and after today’s experience at the Soldotna location, I’m genuinely questioning when customer service stopped being the priority. My husband and I both drove over 35 minutes from Nikiski after I got off work. I work seven days a week, so making the trip into Soldotna specifically to handle our phone account is not exactly convenient. Our goal was simple: cancel one line I’ve been paying for but no longer use, and transfer my husband’s two existing Cricket lines onto our account, bringing us to five lines. When we arrived, I was told they no longer cancel lines in the store because, essentially, cancellations take up employees’ time without generating a sale. That was incredibly frustrating to hear as a paying customer. Customer service shouldn’t only matter when the interaction results in a sale. I tried calling Cricket myself from the store to cancel the unused line, only to be told I would need to call back tomorrow because that department was closed. So after driving 35+ minutes each way, the first part of what we needed accomplished couldn’t be done. We were then told transferring my husband’s two lines today could create billing issues on my account. I actually appreciate being warned about that—I would rather know before making a change. What I did not appreciate was the attitude and the way the information was communicated. There is a difference between explaining a policy to a customer and speaking to grown adults as though they are children. The most frustrating part is that if the unused line could have simply been canceled in the store, we could have proceeded with transferring the other lines and accomplished what we drove all that way to do. I understand policies change. I understand employees don’t personally make Cricket’s corporate policies. But Alaska is different. Many customers drive significant distances to reach a store, and phone support operating on different hours makes “just call customer service” a much bigger inconvenience than it may be elsewhere. When did helping an existing customer become less important because the transaction doesn’t generate a sale? I’ve stayed with Cricket for a long time and intended to consolidate even MORE of my family’s service with them. Instead, I left feeling like my business was an inconvenience. If these are Cricket’s new customer-service standards, they may want to reconsider them—because policies designed around what is easiest or most profitable for the company instead of what actually helps the customer are a good way to push loyal customers elsewhere.
