I’ve trusted VCA Old Trail Animal Hospital for years, but after my recent visit, I can’t recommend them anymore. What was once a caring local practice has become a cold, corporate operation that seems more focused on profits than pets.
I brought my dog in because he wasn’t eating well, expecting compassion and a clear treatment plan. Instead, I paid for a short exam and a $319 blood test, only to be told there was no treatment plan—just a push for even more expensive tests. When I asked why a “sick dog” test cost $500 and how it differed from the one I’d already paid for, the only explanation was, “we charge more for sick dogs.” That’s not medicine—that’s upselling.
The vet showed little empathy and offered no real guidance. Rather than discussing options or trying anything to help, I was told I “might want to start thinking about putting him down.” No plan, no suggestions, no follow-up. I left with fewer answers than when I walked in.
It’s sad to see how far this place has fallen. It used to feel personal and trustworthy. Now it feels transactional and indifferent. If you love your pet and want genuine, compassionate care, look elsewhere—because you won’t find it here anymore.

The 1st time was when my Lab had a huge bloody blister above her upper front tooth, it scared her and myself, I called other veterinarians in the Hanover area and none of them were available to help for an emergency appointment. When I called VCA, Shrewsbury they were able to see Lily immediately. I live this clinic, from the staff who you check in with to the vet techs and amazing Dr Card. Thank you for being kind, compassionate and helping my fur baby. Lily is doing great thanks to their wonderful team!!!

Dr Bennett is my favorite, even our girls approve!
Our one shepherd was recently diagnosed with pannus, although Dr B is not an ophthalmologist, she is going above and beyond, and our girls looks 100% better thanks to her

While we have generally had positive experiences with the staff, they are beholden to a corporation that apparently randomly increases service costs without notifying the customers. Case in point: a shot that cost $70 last month now costs over $100. Reason provided: "they made us do it".
