Every day, for the past three weeks, I’ve contemplated whether or not to write this review. For nearly 20 years, I’ve been a Verizon customer. My interactions have always been outstanding, both personally and professionally and I’ve always felt valued as a customer. Up until now. If you’re a trusting person, be very aware of what you may be walking into. For me, it’s turned out to be one of the worst decisions that I’ve made.
It began this past April with a phone call from a polite gentleman regarding the status of my account. He explained that all lines on my family plan were due for upgrades and there were some great deals happening. I listened, thanked him for the information and told him that we’d been discussing upgrades recently. I asked if we could reconnect later in the summer, (we were in no rush). In the past, I’ve always ordered and set up my own phones. He called again in May and again in June. Each time he called, he made it a point to say, “priority upgrades”, “free phones”, “no increase to the bill” and “no funny business”. As you can imagine, this all sounded very appealing and combined with having someone else be responsible for transferring and setting up the information on my in-law’s phones, it sounded like the best way to go.
During a family camping trip in August, we all decided that we were ready and I reached out to set up an appointment. 10 days passed before I heard back… which surprised me because for months, he had been so eager. I thought maybe he had moved on. When we talked, the offer was still the same. “Free phones, no bill increase, no funny business”. My in-laws live in Spencerport and we literally could have gone to any location, (or I could have done it myself). I made a conscious decision to try and help someone who seemed driven and eager to help his customers. They drove over an hour because they trusted the decision that I was making for them. I trusted him. They were excited to receive their new phones, (they are 80 and 85 years old).
We had another appointment in Geneva so we decided to combine the trips that day. Go to Verizon after our morning appointment, (for us, it’s a 45-minute drive). There was absolutely no urgency relayed with having us come in sooner than later. On 9/6 I made an appointment for 9/23. For months he had been contacting me regarding “priority upgrades” with “no funny business”. We had complete flexibility to come in sooner; we were just trying to combine trips AND to accommodate his schedule.
So there we all are. They’re at the table ready to see their new phones and I’m just looking around. All of the sudden, I hear him say – “that promotion ended last week” and “I don’t have those phones in stock”. They were there for two iPhone 16e’s – he knew we were coming and he knew what they wanted. Instead, he brought out two iPhone 17’s and was telling them what a great deal they were getting. No… that’s not what they drove out here for… they have no need for 17's. He just kept trying to convince them of what a great deal they were getting. My Father-in-Law obviously felt as though it was a bait and switch and my Mother-in-Law was confused. She said, “let’s just get it over with, we drove all this way”. I felt embarrassed and absolutely horrible that I’d allowed my trust in an individual to dictate the fact that we were there and in this situation. They were expecting to pay taxes and set up fees and they left there putting $1249 on their credit card. When I asked why he didn’t let us know beforehand, he said that he could get fired for that. Oh, it’s okay to call repeatedly for months promising everything that you did but you can get fired for telling us that we should come in a 4 days earlier?!!
This is only half of the story. One might wonder why I would even entertain the idea of upgrading my own phone through this store… through him. I have no idea. My incredibly stupid decision has kept me awake every night for the past 3 weeks.
I had a Galaxy S10. I absolutely loved that phone and I would give anything to have it back. (This is the end of part one).
