I had one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life at VCA Amherst Animal Hospital in Butte, MT and feel strongly that other pet owners deserve to know what happened.
On August 4th, 2025, I rushed my 8-year-old bunny, Oreo, to Amherst after finding him lethargic. Dr. Garrett Mussmann was incredibly compassionate and honest with me, explaining that Oreo was in pain and helping me make the very difficult decision to let him go. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Unfortunately, my experience with one of the vet techs was the exact opposite. In the middle of my grief, I was handed paperwork while sobbing over Oreo, told payment options were limited, and later refused service when I returned just 10 minutes later with the full balance. I was assured that if I paid quickly, Oreo’s remains would be cremated right away — but that did not happen.
Instead, I later discovered that Oreo was left in a freezer for 8 days because paperwork was not completed until August 12th. During this time, I called multiple times and was reassured he had already been cremated, which turned out to be untrue. Only when I spoke with Sabrina (who was kind and actually took the time to investigate) did I finally learn the truth.
This negligence and lack of compassion made an already devastating situation so much harder. Oreo was my baby for nearly 8 years, and he deserved dignity and care in his final moments.
While I want to thank Dr. Mussmann and Sabrina for their professionalism and compassion, I cannot overlook the trauma caused by the mishandling of Oreo’s aftercare. I hope Amherst takes accountability and ensures no other grieving pet owner has to go through this.
