Both of my parents died in August after a month and a half of illness. My brother and I have been managing their affairs, including notifying companies of their passing and responsibly closing accounts. Every other company I contacted—Amazon, Comcast, banks, even microchip services for pets—immediately expressed condolences and promptly closed the accounts upon being notified. Verizon, however, subjected me to an experience so cruel and dehumanizing that it left me shaken for the entire day. When I first called Verizon’s customer service line, the representative showed no empathy. Instead, I was told I had to physically bring certified death certificates into a Verizon store, as though I might be lying about my parents’ deaths. I complied, despite the enormous emotional burden of doing so, and went to the store with the documents. I then sat in the store for over an hour while the local staff (who were kind and tried to help) were repeatedly stonewalled by Verizon corporate over the phone. Corporate representatives at first demanded a letter from a doctor in addition to death certificates. This is not only unnecessary but grotesque. No grieving family should be forced to chase down doctors for paperwork just to prove a death has occurred. I was then told that a minuscule outstanding balance on my mother’s very old phone must be paid before the account could be closed. My parents were dying and sick in their final days. We have a lawyer handling probate who has told me not to pay these bills. Yet Verizon insisted on trying to extract payment from a grieving child of two dead parents. Even after the accounts were finally canceled, I was told I must now return the physical devices—and a shipping label was sent to my deceased mother’s email account as if she were still alive. This entire ordeal was profoundly disturbing and needlessly traumatic. Verizon’s policies and call-center representatives demonstrated zero compassion, zero humanity, and zero basic decency. They treated the death of two parents not as a tragedy but as a bureaucratic inconvenience to be managed at the expense of the grieving family. I am filing this complaint to demand: 1. A formal apology for the way I was treated. 2. A review and overhaul of Verizon’s policies regarding the handling of deceased customer accounts. Death certificates alone should suffice, as they do everywhere else. 3. Assurance that no grieving family will ever again have to endure what I was forced to go through. What Verizon subjected me to was not only unprofessional—it was disgusting. It shows a complete lack of empathy for customers and their families. I will be sharing this experience publicly so others know how Verizon treats grieving families.
