A well is considered to be shallow if it is under 100' and constructed above the bedrock. Shallow wells are also referred to as dug wells, wash wells or gravel wells. Shallows wells are dependent upon soil type and in most cases surrounded by a sandy gravel material. A screen is installed at the bottom of the casing that is used to hold back the sand or gravel while allowing water to flow through. Shallow wells can be used for drinking water and/or irrigation and often produce a very high yield.
