  The engineer guessed which way my joists ran and guessed wrong. The resulting calcs produced were incorrect and cost me thousands of pounds of unnecessary work and materials. The excuse was "I am correct 90% of the time, unfortunately you are in the 10%" What is the point paying for a professional service when they just guess!! My review still stands regardless of Mr Goacher's comments below. They may cover themselves legally by expecting everyone else to check their work before commencement, but this isn't morally or ethically right!! As a professional service they should do everything they can to understand the existing structure of a property. The simple purchase of a joist finder for £30 would have avoided this whole situation. Making false claims about the ability of my builder who has gone over and above to rectify the situation is abhorrent.

  Very helpful and honest advice provided during the site visit. A detailed design package was received shortly after and they were happy to discuss any (layman) queries I had as well as future works. Quick and reliable service. Would recommend.
