I was looking for a builder who would be happy to do a full house renovation, and I’m incredibly glad I found Mike at Markland Build.
I had contacted several other builders and either received very high quotes or simply never heard back. After messaging Mike on WhatsApp, he came to assess the project the very next day (a Saturday) and even brought Martin, the painter and decorator, along so they could properly understand the scope of the work.
The following week he returned again, this time with his kitchen designer, electrician, and plumber, so that every aspect of the project could be reviewed in detail. This meant the quote he provided afterwards was very accurate and fully itemised. It wasn’t inflated like some of the others I received, but it also wasn’t suspiciously cheap. It felt fair and transparent, which I really appreciated.
After agreeing to proceed, Mike said he would start in around two weeks; and he did exactly that! On the first day, I greeted him and Theo and then went to the bank to arrange the first instalment and fill my car. By the time I returned about two hours later around 70% of the house had already been stripped out! That really set the tone for the whole project.
The speed and organisation throughout the renovation was genuinely impressive. Mike completed the entire house renovation in just 6 weeks, including over the Christmas and New Year period, when most people would understandably slow down. Other builders had quoted 3–4 months for the same work!! Despite this Mike and Theo regularly worked through weekends to ensure the project stayed on schedule, which I really appreciated.
We were also unable to safely place a skip outside the property, but Mike went out of his way to ensure that he and the other tradesmen removed waste from site each day, which was extremely considerate and kept everything tidy and manageable. The is yet another example where he went above and beyond on my project.
The renovation itself was extensive and included a new kitchen, bathroom, kitchen/diner knock through (with RSJ), full redecoration, electrics, plastering, plumbing and joinery.
One particular thing I wanted was internal wall insulation. Several builders either told me it couldn’t be done or tried to push me towards external insulation because it was “easier”. Mike, however, had experience installing internal insulation with insulated plasterboard and was more than happy to do it properly.
Thanks to him, the EPC rating improved from D to a strong C, which I’m very pleased with (although my heating company won’t be!).
Mike managed the entire project from start to finish, coordinating all the trades, ordering materials, and helping me choose finishes. This took a huge amount of stress out of the renovation.
His Communication was excellent throughout too. Mike regularly kept me updated with text messages and calls about progress or anything that came up. He was frequently on site himself doing the work, and so when I visited, he was always happy for a chat. Mike is very approachable and friendly. I never felt the need to constantly check up on things because he proved himself to be very trustworthy and reliable.
Most importantly, the quality of the finished work is fantastic. The photos really do speak for themselves! My favourite part is the kitchen, but the standard across the entire renovation is excellent. You can tell Mike genuinely cares about doing things properly and taking pride in his work.
If you are looking for a builder in Nottingham, I would strongly recommend contacting Mike at Markland Build as soon as possible, before everyone else realises how good he is and his schedule fills up!
In all seriousness, I’m extremely grateful to Mike and his team for transforming my property from a damp, mouldy mess house into a real show home.
A huge huge thank you to Mike and his dream team: Theo, Martin, Lee, Paul, Dave, and everyone else who helped bring the project together.
If I ever renovate another property in Nottingham, Mike will be the first person I contact :))
