  I picked up a large apple pie from Budgens in Castle Acre (where we’re staying this week, we later noticed it was made by a local bakery) and wow—it was absolutely outstanding. From the first glance, it looked beautifully baked, with a golden crust that promised something special. The pastry was rich, buttery, and perfectly crisp, with that delicate melt-in-the-mouth texture that only really good baking achieves. Inside, the filling was generous and packed with tender apple pieces, cooked just enough to be soft while still holding their shape. The flavour was spot on—sweet but not overly so, with a gentle tartness that kept it fresh and balanced. It felt like a proper traditional apple pie—comforting, homemade, and incredibly satisfying. I liked it so much that the next day we drove over to Swaffham, where the bakery that makes them is based, and bought three more to take home as gifts. That’s how good it was!
