Disappointing customer service at CeX Preston
I visited CeX Preston today with my 71-year-old father, who was looking forward to purchasing several games. Unfortunately, what should have been an enjoyable shopping experience was spoiled by the attitude and lack of courtesy shown by the member of staff serving us.
My father jokingly asked whether there was a discount for purchasing seven games. We fully appreciate that prices are fixed, but the response was unnecessarily blunt: "No, all the prices are set!" This was followed by an offer to take the games back, which felt dismissive and gave the impression that she expected him to abandon his purchase simply because he'd asked for a discount.
My father then politely asked if he could inspect the condition of the second-hand discs before paying. The assistant responded, "But I've already checked them, and you have a five-year warranty." Nevertheless, he explained that he would still like to check them himself.
Ironically, during this process, the assistant discovered that one of the discs had disc rot and was unsuitable for sale. Despite previously assuring us that the discs had been checked, there was no apology. She simply informed him that he couldn't have that game and that hopefully another copy would come into stock soon.
When showing my father the remaining discs, she wouldn't allow him to handle them, making it difficult for him to inspect their surfaces properly under the shop lighting. As he moved his head to try to get a better view, she continued moving the disc, making matters more difficult. Her response of "Just let me know which way you want me to point the disc, love, and I will!" was delivered in a tone that came across as impatient and condescending.
I appreciate that retail staff may have policies to follow, and we certainly weren't expecting special treatment. However, a little patience, politeness and basic customer service would have gone a long way.
What upset me most was seeing how this interaction affected my father. Despite being left feeling annoyed and upset, he remained unfailingly polite and respectful throughout. He wasn't asking for anything unreasonable, merely the opportunity to inspect the second-hand items he intended to purchase. Given that a defective disc was actually discovered, his request was clearly justified.
I chose not to challenge the assistant's behaviour in the shop because I didn't want to create an uncomfortable confrontation, but I left feeling genuinely disappointed by the way my father had been treated.
Customers, regardless of age, deserve to be spoken to with courtesy, patience and respect. Sadly, that was lacking during our visit today.
A little kindness costs nothing, and it would have made all the difference.
