  We did a private Peninsular War Tour over nine days in September 2026 with Ian Gumm. We commenced in Lisbon and concluded in Porto. The trip included the Lines of Torres Vedras, the French Siege of Badajoz, the Battle of Albuera, the Third Allied Siege of Badajoz, the Bridge at Alacantra, the Battle of Talavera, the Battle of Salamanca, the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, the Sieges of Ciudad-Rodrigo, the Action on the Coa, Sieges of Almedia, the Battle of Bussaco, and the Battle of the Douro. Ian is an amazing guide, historian, and a really nice bloke. He was able to adapt the tour to meet our needs and limitations. He had one passenger with an extensive knowledge of the battles who wanted to see the terrain and understand the complexities of the battles and one who had read and watched Sharpe! He quickly gauged our preferences for information and provided a balanced narrative that worked for both of us. The weather was on the hot side 38 -42 degrees, even for Australians. Ian’s motto was “if it is too hot to walk and the car can go there we will”! We very much appreciated this. It was phenomenal to stand on slopes now planted with olives and grapes about a metre high and imagine them as lines of soldiers. Our picnic lunches were fun, and our morning supermarket excursions and coffees gave a great insight into Spanish life. Our accommodation was excellent. Ian and Jo put a lot of effort into ensuring our needs were met. The Castle at Ciudad-Rodrigo was stunning and being right behind the cathedral in Salamanca was lovely. They also organised our pre and post tour accommodation and it was perfect. Bill got everything he wanted from the tour and it rounded out his understanding of the Peninsular Wars and the exceptional skills of Lord Wellington. My friends are stunned that I preferred the Battlefields tour over the Douro River cruise!

  Brilliant organisation and willingness to tailor their assistance to our needs. Logistics were handled perfectly and our Tour Guide was exceptional in all respects. As a group, we do a tour a year. It is a very special time for us and we are careful about who is involved. I would use ‘In the Footsteps’ again and will discuss our next trip with them…..to Monte Cassino.

  My family had an amazing time on our trip. Jo and Ian planned and executed a perfect itinerary fit for our family. For someone who isn’t the biggest war history geek in my family, the tours were extremely interesting and easy to follow along with Ian’s notes/diagrams/extreme expertise. Each stop on our tour was very memorable, and everyone walked away with tons of takeaways. Aside from the tours, each hotel/restaurant was picked with intention and fit our family great. As long as you communicate what your’e looking for, they’ll be able to find exactly what you want. Thanks to both Jo and Ian for an unforgettable trip to celebrate my Dad’s 60th birthday! I would 100% recommend to anyone interested.

  A superb WW1 Battlefield Tour for a party of 28 retired Naval Officers and wives mainly from Liverpool. Administration at all stages was sound and consistent. Transport arrangements worked well with an excellent driver (Mike) and a very spacious and comfortable coach. Ferry embarkation each way was hassle free,DFDS ferries excellent. Our Tour Guide (Tim ) was always helpful, very knowledgeable in every respect and the itinerary he planned met the aim of following the Royal Naval Division on the Somme and at Passchendale. Accommodation at Ypres at the Ariane is to be highly recommended. "In the Footsteps" delivered an excellent tour in a helpful and constructive manner. May 2023
