Before seeing Dora, I had spent upwards of £20,000 on private healthcare. I had seen two chiropractors, two osteopaths and tried countless treatments in the hope of getting better. I had even learned acupuncture to try to manage some of the symptoms myself.
I also travelled to London to see a specialist chiropractor, where I had seven X-rays taken in around ten minutes, only to be told afterwards that I was too complex to treat.
My original injury was a severe hyperflexion injury damaging my upper cervical spine and posterior ligaments. This caused a secondary domino effect throughout the rest of my axial skeleton, as my body shifted and compensated for the altered position of my neck. The extent of this was difficult to appreciate in scans, diagnosed as atypical scheumers, khiphosis and retroverted pelvis. It was visible in photographs and in the way my whole body held itself when I stood. Standing was hell.
Dora was the first person who genuinely understood what I was describing. The injury is rare, poorly researched and seems to be better recognised in America than it is here. More importantly, she truly wanted to understand what had happened to me. She did not decide for herself what my injury must have been or try to fit my experience into a predetermined explanation. She listened carefully to how I had experienced it and used that understanding to work out what could safely be adjusted to help.
This also meant that she did not need to work directly on the injured area to make a difference. Other parts of my body had shifted and compensated around the position of my neck, and Dora seemed to understand how those changes connected.
After the first time she treated me, I honestly felt as though I was in shock for days. Whatever she managed to release made such an extraordinary difference that it was difficult to take in. It felt completely out of this world. Things have occasionally gone slightly off again since then, but I have never returned to the state I was in before seeing her.
Because of my previous upper cervical spine injury and ongoing diagnosis of craniocervical instability, I am at the more complex end of patients for whom inappropriate chiropractic treatment could carry a genuine risk. I was therefore extremely cautious about who I allowed to treat me.
What I respected immediately about Dora was her complete lack of arrogance. She never assumed she could fix everything or acted as though she knew better than the condition in front of her. She was honest about her limits and told me clearly that my neck itself was a no-go area. She understood that there were still other areas she could work with safely, without ever taking unnecessary risks.
That gave me enormous confidence in her. She has exceptionally high standards, understands risk and knows when not to intervene.
I know some people are frightened of chiropractic treatment because of stories they have heard, particularly where the neck is concerned. Dora is thoughtful, cautious and highly skilled. She treats the individual in front of her rather than applying the same approach to everyone.
She is also incredibly genuine, previous chiropractors had told me I required three manipulations a week for several weeks. With Dora, I initially attended fortnightly, then monthly, and I now only need to see her every three months. This happened in a short window of time. She bases that decision on what my body actually requires and how well I am holding the adjustments, rather than following a predetermined treatment schedule.
I believe what Dora has is incredibly rare. Qualifications and research are important, but truly helping someone heal also requires instinct, sensitivity and an ability to understand the person in front of you. I am in no doubt that Dora has that gift.
Dora had been recommended to me several times before I finally bit the bullet and booked an appointment. I only wish I had done it sooner. She has made a difference to my life that nobody else was able to make, and I cannot recommend her highly enough.
