Horrible experience.
I arrived approximately 6–7 minutes late for my appointment due to extremely busy parking and one of the parking machines being out of order, which caused delays for several people ahead of me. As soon as I arrived, I apologised for being late and explained the situation.
Initially, I was told that there is usually a 10-minute grace period for appointments. However, after checking the computer, the receptionist stated that they were extremely busy and that it was highly unlikely I could be accommodated. What I found particularly frustrating was the complete lack of empathy shown. While I accept that being late was ultimately my responsibility, I had been waiting a long time for this appointment and was genuinely apologetic.
It was disappointing to be treated in such a rigid and judgemental manner, especially in a healthcare setting where patients expect understanding and compassion. The receptionist appeared to have made up her mind from the outset that I would not be seen. Adding to my frustration, I noticed that another patient was seen during my appointment slot, suggesting that the appointment had not actually been held for me during the few minutes I was late.
Mistakes and delays happen, and I fully understand the need to keep clinics running on time. However, a little empathy, professionalism, and willingness to help would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, the attitude I encountered left me feeling punished rather than supported.

I got an appointment today to have my eye looked as it was bloodshot and sore. I am grateful for the quick appointment, especially with it being on the NHS. Hopefully these eye-drops will do the job.
However, whilst the guy I saw seemed to be efficient, I didn't find him to be friendly at all and interactions between staff and customers are a large part of what customer service is about. Hence the three stars.
Doing the job is one thing. Making customers feel welcomed and happy to have been when they leave through that door is just as important.
Gathercole & Ward are the best opticians I have ever attended. Extremely thorough and competent, they generate real confidence in their knowledge and care. Would highly recommend.

I really struggle finding glasses for my very high myopic prescription.
Then luckily came across Gathercole & Ward.
They are amazing, friendly and very knowledgeable.
I had my lenses specially made in Japan, and I'm so happy with them! Tessa, who I saw, helped me choose frames to suit the lenses and my face.
I would highly recommend this optician, especially if you have very poor eyesight.
Thank you so, so much.
